1st Test: South Africa vs New Zealand at Johannesburg

South Africa host New Zealand in another short series with this test series the same length as the Australia-Sri Lanka contest, that length being two tests.

South Africa haven't changed their test line-up, with the same eleven that faced Pakistan at home taking on New Zealand in this game. Still no room for Shaun Pollock with Makhaya Ntini and Dale Steyn preferred to take the new ball. Andre Nel will once again be the third seam bowler.

New Zealand have their own problems to worry about. The batting line-up is short on experience with Stephen Fleming heading into the game with a thumb complaint, sustained when fielding against South Africa "A" in an earlier tour game. Michael Papps and Craig Cumming have little test match experience and adding to that inexperience is Ross Taylor who is expected to make his debut, slotting in at number five.

They pale in compaison to South Africa's top six who have 63 test match centuries between them. Jacques Kallis is also in cracking form and will be a thorn in the side to the New Zealand attack should he get going.

Another problem the Kiwis face is that they haven't played a test for eleven months. Their last test was ironically against Australia's opponent, Sri Lanka, who won that game by 217 runs. John Bracewell, the NZ coach isn't worries though, stressing that his chargers need to take the game ball-by-ball.

The pitch looks to be a seamers one but should dry out as the test continues. Paul Harris and Daniel Vettori could spin up a storm later in the week if conditions go their way.

This should be an intriguing contest. South Africa looked the goods against Pakistan last month, New Zealand will need to get the cobwebs out early if they want to challenge here, ther relatively new batting line-up will need to sttle quickly.

Re: 1st Test: South Africa vs New Zealand at Johannesburg

Graeme Smith gets bowled by Martin for 1. South Africa are 1/7 off 4 overs.

Re: 1st Test: South Africa vs New Zealand at Johannesburg

Amla gone for 5 caught behind off Bond. South Africa really struggling at 2/20.

Re: 1st Test: South Africa vs New Zealand at Johannesburg

South Africa are 5/161 at tea on the first day.

Kallis fell quickly after lunch for 29 and Ashwell Prince followed soon after. AB de Villiers and Herschelle Gibbs formed a good partnership but a poor choice from Gibbs saw him back in the pavillion for 63.

It's been a pitch for the seam bowlers with Martin and Bond snaring two wickets and Iain O'Brien has one scalp.

New Zealand in control at tea on Day 1.

Kallis has been on fire, not so much in this test though. Gibbs was batting well but then got out to a silly shot.

Anyway, South Africa were bowled out for 226, Graeme Smith will rue his decision to bat on what was a pitch suited to the bowlers. New Zealand are 2/41 in reply, Stephen Fleming is 22 not out with Ntini and Steyn the wicket-takers.

Re: 1st Test: South Africa vs New Zealand at Johannesburg

If you thought South Africa's batting was bad then New Zealand's was abysmal. The Kiwis crashed out for 118 with Stephen Fleming being the only real contributor with 40. The rest didn't get above 15.

Dale Steyn cleaned out the Kiwi batting order taking 5/34 and was able supported by Makhaya Ntini who took 3/47. Jacques Kallis took the wickets of Taylor and Styris to finish with neat figures of 2/11.

In reply, South Africa are 2/63. Gibbs and Smith went early but Hashim Amla and Kallis have formed a small partnership. They've got a lead of 171 already and they probably won't need too much more to put the game out of reach for New Zealand.

Re: 1st Test: South Africa vs New Zealand at Johannesburg

Massive turnaround from the first two days. South Africa still haven't lost a wicket and are 2/303 not even halfway through Day 3.

There seems to be nothing in the pitch for the Kiwis and they have struggled to have any influence on the South African batsmen. Kallis has moved to 155 not out and Hashim Amla is on 120. The lead is 411 now and you'd think this game is out of NZ's reach already.

Re: 1st Test: South Africa vs New Zealand at Johannesburg

South Africa utterly belting the Kiwis atm.

Kallis now 177, Amla plodding along on 133 off 290 balls.

2/336, absolutely dominating.

Re: 1st Test: South Africa vs New Zealand at Johannesburg

South Africa declared at 3/422. Kallis was finally out for 186 after nicking a Jacob Oram delivery to the 'keeper, McCullum. Hashim Amla helped himself to 176 not out with Ashwell Price 25 not out when the declaration came.

New Zealand then had to face 17 overs and in doing so they lost three wickets for only 57 runs. Cumming, Fleming and Taylor all back in the shed after an early wicket to Steyn and then a double strike by Andre Nel to remove the latter two batsmen.

The Kiwis still need 474 runs to win, they won't get near it though. This pitch is starting to wear and some large cracks have already formed in some areas with the ball staying low a few times late in that NZ batting period.

The best they can do is to try and score as many runs as they can from here, if they bat anything like they did in the first innings, this could be a very heavy defeat.

Re: 1st Test: South Africa vs New Zealand at Johannesburg

Easy win to Soutrh Africa. New Zealand didn't put up much effort with the bat and were all out for 172. Daniel Vettori scored 46 not out with Jacob Oram the only other batter above 40.

Dale Steyn finished with five wickets to go with his five in the first innings. His ten wicket haul was his first in test cricket and gave him the Man of the Match award for his efforts.

A big win for South Africa, 358 runs at the close, something that no-one expected after New Zealand's dominance on Day 1.

The second and final test starts on Friday taking place at SuperSport Park in Centurion.
