2010 Australian Indoor Cricket Open Championships (Silverwater, NSW)

The final domestic tournament of the winter has arrived with the Open Championships being held at Silverwater, New South Wales. Western Australia head into the tournament as last year's Open Mens title winners, thrashing Queensland in a one-sided Grand Final. However, WA have a weaker side at the carnival this year so Queensland will be looking to exact revenge and watch out for New South Wales and the ACT to put up strong performances.

The tournament begins today (25th of July) and runs through to Saturday the 31st with GF's being held on the final day with the semi-finals and prelims being played on the Friday. This tournament has four grades, Open Mens, Open Womens, 21 and Under Men and also the Lord Taverners grade (better known as LT's) which is for cricketers who have been diagnosed with some form of learning disabilities (e.g. dyslexia etc). The Open Men's draw has been seeded with WA being seeded number one as they were the champions last year and the team that is seeded ninth is the Northern Territory. Each team will play their games according to their seed number, for example WA plays the NT today (1 vs 9) and then 2 vs 8 and so on.

Let's have a look at the entry list for each Division,

Code:
Open Mens Open Womens 21 and Under Men Lord Taverners (LT's)

Western Australia Queensland North Queensland Queensland
Queensland NSW Blues Queensland NSW Blues
ACT Victoria NSW Blues Victoria
North Queensland South Australia NSW Cyclones South Australia
Victoria Western Australia ACT Western Australia
NSW Blues Victoria
NSW Cyclones Western Australia
South Australia
Northern Territory

Hopefully we'll start to hear some results and ladders coming through tomorrow which I will provide in this thread. You can also find the tournament draw at the link below.

Should be yet another great tournament and we should see some super indoor cricket played. @|

Northern Territory 8 0 8 0 575 1107 51.942 7 7

Amazingly, the top four sides in the Open Men's grade finished on six wins and two losses each. Queensland slacked off in their final two games, losing both and cost themselves an undefeated qualifying rounds stage. Big guns NSw Blues and ACT both missed the finals, the Blues missing the finals for the second year in a row whilsy ACT had a tournament they'd rather forget. Interestingly, North Queensland had a very strong showing, surprisingly all by finishing in third after the qualifying rounds and Victoria also made the finals coming in fourth.

South Australia were a lot better this season, winning three games whilst the Cyclones had a poor tournament winning only one match and that was against perrenial struggler Northern Territory. However, it's good to see the NT boys giving it a crack and trying to mix it with the stronger states and I'm sure they'll be back to try again next year.

Open Women

Code:
State Play Win Loss Draw For Agst % Skins Points

Queensland 8 8 0 0 1242 524 237.023 28 52
Victoria 8 5 2 1 1108 789 140.431 20 36.5
NSW Blues 8 4 3 1 1067 923 115.601 18 31.5
South Australia 8 2 6 0 776 1168 66.439 10 16
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Western Australia 8 0 8 0 556 1346 41.308 4 4

No suprises to see Queensland finishing on top of the ladder, the Queensland women are a pretty good side. Victoria finished second surprising everyone really as NSW Blues are generally Queensland's main threat. The Redbacks round out the top four with WA finishing last, although that was to be expected as the WA girls are starting to get on a bit now. However, the future looks bright for Women's indoor cricket in WA with some very exciting prospects in the Under 18 side which made the GF earlier this month in the junir tournament.

Queensland on top again but the rest of the comp was fairly even, NSW Blues finished second but Victoria, NSW Cyclones and Western Australia battled it out for third and fourth with the two former teams making it through. WA will be disappointed not to make it as they had a reasonable side, a couple of guys who play for my centre as well.

North Queensland finished sixth whilst ACT had a terrible tournament, not winning a game and averaging about one skin per game.

Queensland on top again, their LT's are really, really good and would really put it up to a few of the Superleague sides around the country. Surprisingly South Australia finished second, losing only to Queensland for the entire qualifying rounds. The Vics were third with NSW Blues and WA battling it out for fourth spot which NSW won by one point.

Re: 2010 Australian Indoor Cricket Open Championships (Silverwater, NSW)

Improved performance from the NT. No surprises with QLD & WA again at the top.

Re: 2010 Australian Indoor Cricket Open Championships (Silverwater, NSW)

Yeah, they were a lot better this year. Managed to more than double the amount of points they got from last year's tournament as well.

I imagine that the outdoor season there would detract a few guys from playing for NT would it Chips?

Re: 2010 Australian Indoor Cricket Open Championships (Silverwater, NSW)

Yeah there is a few that could be playing. Though indoor is not taken as seriously as it once was up here. The NT titles have improved over but may fall in a heap again from what has been happening so far in the last few months. I would have gone away with the side if it wasn't for the outdoor season.

Some shoddy updating on the AICF wesbite has seen no scores submitted by the association for the Preliminary and Grand Finals which is fairly disappointing. However, there are some results on Indoor Cricket TV which has most of the games up there which are free to watch, all you have to do is sign up but the only downfall is there is no sound for any of the games. It's a really good site and allows you to view most of the matches from the tournament, hopefully they will get all of them up there by the end of the week. I will provide a link below,

Australian Open Championships 2010

Next year's titles will be held in Western Australia with the tournament jointly shared by Ballajura Indoor Sports Stadium and also my home centre, Bouncer Sports Centre. It will be good to see the Championships head over to WA for the first time I believe. WA has alredy hosted the Masters and Juniors tournaments in previous years as well as the Masters World Cup a few years ago.

Hopefully WA will put in a better showing after being eliminated in the Preliminary Final this year in the Open Mens and not making any of the other finals series in the remaining grades. Next year, I'm hoping that a better selection policy for the 21's will be in force and that the Women and the LT's can be more competitive. I know the Open Mens would have been livid at not getting a crack at Queensland in the GF.

Anyway, I hope to have the final results up in the next few days, provided AICF actually put them up.

Probably part of the problem why NT aren't too competitive, had some the outdoor boys been involved I'm sure NT could have won a couple of games. They were a lot better this season though, there percentage was at about 50% this year but last year it was only 15% so that was a big improvement and they also scored seven points this year compared to only three last year. Hopefully in 2011 they can challenge some of the other bottom teams for wins.

What makes you say things may fall in a heap again?

Re: 2010 Australian Indoor Cricket Open Championships (Silverwater, NSW)

Depends all on how the two centres up here approach it. The six pack indoor is doing far better than the normal 8-a-side competition and the standard in the 8-a-side has significantly dropped off.

All results have been updated, thank god for indoor cricket TV!! All the vids of the games look to be on the site too so if you're keen to watch some of the games, sign up and have a look.

Looks to have been a great tournament, hopefully we can put on an even better show next year!!

Fair enough. I know six-a-side is fairly popular at one centre here in WA. Trick is to limit the amount of time the game gets and focus more on the eight-a-side stuff.
