2nd Test: England vs West Indies at Headingley

The second test of this series is upon us with the first encounter ending in a tame draw. The weather hampered the first test with rain and bad light interrupting play quite regularly.

The Windies struggled early on, their bowlers letting England rack up a massive first innings score. Poor fielding and ordinary bowling didn't help their cause as the English made the most of their home conditions. Collingwood, Bell, Prior and Cook all racked up centuries as they piled on the runs in the first innings before declaring.

However, the Windies too proved they were more than capable with the bat and managed to score some runs of their own. But, there was no-one who could register a big score and ultimately they trailed on first innings. Another English declaration left a modest total for the Windies to chase but rain on the fifth day stopped all that.

England's bowlers will again be tested in this match. Hoggard was injured in the first game and will miss as does Andrew Flintoff who is still not fit to play. Ryan Sidebottom comes in for his first match in six years and is one of four bowlers in the side with Pietersen, Collingwood and maybe returning captain, Michael Vaughan to shoulder the 5th bowler duties.

Vaughan is also a big inclusion. He returns and immediately inherits the role of skipper and he should be able to add another dimension towards England's psychological tactics. Whether he is able to have an influence with the bat and/or ball if required is another matter.

West Indies should go in unchanged. They weren't too bad in the first test although their bowlers certainly took a bit of a pelting, especially in the first innings. They will be looking to take early wickets when they get the opportunity to bowl, they can't afford to let the English batting line-up get four more centuries.

Expect a good game here. Both sides seem to be relatively even and with good weather expected early, we should see a cracking match.

Re: 2nd Test: England vs West Indies at Headingley

Big change for the Windies, Shivnarine Chanderpaul finds himself out of the side due to a bleeding knee. Not really sure of the extent of his injury but its kept him out of the team so it must be serious enough. Sylvester Joseph is his replacement.

Play has just resumed after tea. England are 2/232 in the 56th over. Michael Vaughan is on 95 with Kevin Pietersen not out on 60. Earlier, Cook made 42 and Strauss 15.

Chris Gayle and Daren Powell are the wicket-takers for the Windies.

Re: 2nd Test: England vs West Indies at Headingley

At least the West Indies picked up some wickets (unlike Bangladesh earlier today). However, they're still well behind in this match (like Bangladesh).

Vaughan just got his century.

250-2 after 59

Re: 2nd Test: England vs West Indies at Headingley

Hundred for Vaughan. An edge through first slip's legs brings up his 16th Test hundred. Took him 164 balls accompanied by 11 fours.

England are 2/250.

Re: 2nd Test: England vs West Indies at Headingley

Vaughan hits one that would have gone for six, but Morton made a great running catch right over the boundary rope to eliminate him for 103.

England 254-3

Re: 2nd Test: England vs West Indies at Headingley

Pietersen gets his century from just 104 balls

291-3

Re: 2nd Test: England vs West Indies at Headingley

Collymore gets Collingwood.

316-4 after 72

Supposedly 18 overs to go today, but less than 30 minutes remain.
Obviously they'll go over, but I'm not sure they'll get all 18 in before it gets dark.

Re: 2nd Test: England vs West Indies at Headingley

and now Collymore gets Bell

329-5 after 76

take one more wicket today and then this will have been a good session for the West Indies

Re: 2nd Test: England vs West Indies at Headingley

stumps on day 1

366-5 after 85

Sarwan was off the field injured at the end of the day. Hopefully he'll be able to bat tomorrow. He'll also need to take the new ball tomorrow morning to try to get Pietersen and Prior.

Re: 2nd Test: England vs West Indies at Headingley

So apparently Sarwan was taken to the hospital.

We'll see whether he plays or not, but if he doesn't it'd be a huge blow to the West Indies, losing one of their top batsmen for both innings, not to mention the fact that Chanderpaul had to be replaced too.

If they can somehow hold on for a draw here, they ought to celebrate it like a victory.

Re: 2nd Test: England vs West Indies at Headingley

And Kevin Pietersen has finally passed his magical triple high score of 158.
He's up to 164 right now, and
England is 432-5 after 100 overs

Re: 2nd Test: England vs West Indies at Headingley

It's been announced that Sarwan won't take the field today and definitely will not bat in West Indies first innings, but he might be available for their second innings.

Re: 2nd Test: England vs West Indies at Headingley

The tv cameras show Plunkett waiting to be the next batsman in, and literally one second later Powell bowls Prior for 75. Great partnership between Prior and Pietersen though.

England 489-6

Re: 2nd Test: England vs West Indies at Headingley

498-6 at lunch, Pietersen up to 189

The big question is if and when England might declare.
Apparently the weather forecast for the next few days is pretty bad, so if England want to win this test, they'll need to get a bunch of overs in against the West Indies today. And they want to even more so since they won't have to worry about Sarwan today.

Re: 2nd Test: England vs West Indies at Headingley

Pietersen and Plunkett really piling on the runs here, with some boundaries from Plunkett and some big sixes from Pietersen. The England tail starts to take off their pads in the pavillion and it looks like the declaration is coming sooner rather than later.

And Pietersen goes for yet another big one but Taylor makes a good running and diving catch to finally get him. He's out for 226, and England declares immediately.

570-7

so West Indies need 371 to avoid the follow on

Re: 2nd Test: England vs West Indies at Headingley

Plunkett was on 44, so he was a tiny bit unlucky not to get a chance at his half century.

Pietersen's score is the first double century of 2007.

Re: 2nd Test: England vs West Indies at Headingley

Bad news,
Gayle out

17-1

congratulations to Sidebottom for getting his first test wicket

Re: 2nd Test: England vs West Indies at Headingley

And now Sidebottom gets Ganga with yet another lbw decision.

West Indies 23-2

whoever picked Sidebottom for this test is looking like a genius

Re: 2nd Test: England vs West Indies at Headingley

Complete collapse here from the West Indies!!!

They're 114-7 after 28!!!

And remember, Sarwan won't bat today, so only Collymore is left after the current partnership between Bravo and Taylor.

Not only will England enforce the follow on, but they'll do it on Day 2!

Re: 2nd Test: England vs West Indies at Headingley

Sidebottom gets his 4th wicket, and West Indies are 146-9 all out.

Though the replay made it look like Strauss may have caught that last one on the ground.

Anyway, West Indies still trail by 424, and they're going to have to bat for about another 10 overs today.
