A Podshaver's Story

This is a video from a guy I really respect and who I rate as probably the best batmaker out there at the moment, Julian Millichamp.

Although it's a bit cheesy in the presentation it's packed full of interesting information from the history of the game, all about willow, the art of batmaking, through to a look at pads and gloves and what to look for in terms of protection.

It's a little under 30 minutes long but I really do recommend spending the time having a watch of it.

Thanks A_A for the Video.
Excellent info about the bat making process and through look at the pads & gloves in terms of protection.
One thing he mentioned was that of 5-6 coats of oiling for the bats.
What do u reckon about the same?

that is 1 of the best cricket videosi've seen. it has so much of info & you can
see how much comes into making a bat.

It's a tough one to be honest and something that I would have to say comes down to personal choice. I tend to go with 3 coats, then maybe one or two top ups during the year but it does depend on the bat and the weather conditions.

In India you may be better off going with a few more coats due to the heat and dryness but I would say that the general consensus is that it's better to under oil than over oil.

Seen this a while ago on dvd, very interesting to know about what's needed to be a top class pod shaver, very interesting.I'd reccomend any young person thinking about going into bat making to watch this.

Re: A Podshaver's Story

A_A, I have purchased a new bat and applied only 3 coats of oil and it is in knocking process.
Do u feel it is enough and at least another 3 hours of knocking is left out of the total 8 hours knocking.
What do u suggest?

Re: A Podshaver's Story

I'd say that the 3 should be ok for now - you can always top it up later in the season\off season.

As for the knocking in, I would have though that you're at the point where it can be used in nets against old balls. Try digging in your fingernail in the corner of the bat - if you make a mark easily then it needs more work, if it hardly shows you've probably done enough.

Re: A Podshaver's Story

I work about 2 minutes walk away from the Millichamp and Hall workshop!

Some of the bats they make are almost too good to be used!

Re: A Podshaver's Story

Certainly is. I work in Taunton, about 2 mins from the County Ground. Looking forward to the summer when I can watch the 20 20 after work with a pint!

Re: A Podshaver's Story
