Are workouts necessary?

Are workouts necessary to improve (i'm 14) , isn't it enough if you just play and practice a lot?

I don't usually see much development with a strength workout in my game. However, I recently started 'sock cricket', and after doing it for hours, I really feel stronger after a day. Same thing with bowling. So are workouts necessary?
I have a month and a half ahead of me with lots of free time since its vacation for me. Should I just play and practice, or go get a gym membership?

Re: Are workouts necessary?

I am not sure about the UAE or Bangalore Shaaz but I would not encourage a 14 year old to join a gym in the UK. Not because I do not believe in working out.. I think it is a waste of money until you are 16.

Gyms over here allow u16s to use the cardio machines only.

Working out is extremely important for any sportsperson; it is not just about the muscle bulk and to be honest, muscle bulk can seriously inhibit certain areas of performance. You need to condition your body and your mind to maximise any potential.

If you would like to go down the workout route and you have a really good fitness base at the moment, I would advise you to get hold of a personal trainer; you only pay them for the time you are with them and it can work out a lot cheaper and far more specific than joining a gym.

Agreed, it's about building adaptable strength, speed, power, mobility, agility, endurance, balance and coordination. Not just having big muscles.
