Australia announce Provisional Squad of 30 for Champions Trophy

Australia has announced its provisional squad of 30 for the upcoming Champions Trophy. The squad includes five newcomers who include George Bailey, Xavier Doherty, Brett Geeves, Ryan Harris and Tim Paine.

Amazingly, Tasmania provided four of the five newcomers to the provisional squad which is testament to their recent success in the Ford Ranger Cup.

Test spinner Beau Casson failed to win a place in the selected squad due to "not having enough exposure" to the one-day game. Tasmanian quick bowler Ben Hilfenhaus also failed to gain a place due to recovering from injury.

The final squad of 15 is set to be announced on or before August 11.

Provisional Squad

Not too many surprises there. George Bailey is one name that I didn't expect to be there, had an average of just over 25 last season but looks to be a long-term project. Ryan Harris is another, averages 35.51 but had an okay year. Dan Cullen is probably the shock selection in my opinion. Cullen was terrible last season, both in the one-dayers and in the Pura Cup. I don't think he is really deserving of a spot to be honest. It is highly unlikely he will make the final cut anyway.

Other than that, it looks pretty standard. Wouldn't mind them taking Doherty to the tournament, far better spinner than Cullen and Hauritz who is also a dud. Cam White should only be a part-time option.

What are everyone else's thoughts?

Cullen's selection shows the dearth of spinners in Australia - awful domestically.

Byrce McGain is unlucky to miss out. He bowled far better than Cullen and others last season.

I'd also like to see this be Hayden's last one day tournament. I believe he needs to retire from one dayers and stay fit for the tests. He's a gun but it seems his body can't cope with the workload of international cricket.

Aint that right.

Will be awhile before another kick arse spinner is in the side again.

The ones I've bolded are the 15 I reckon will go. Not too many new faces, but there will be some in the mix if there are any injuries to other players. I agree with you Ljp that Hauritz is a hack and Cullen, though he's got potential, shouldn't be there. I would have thought someone like Aaron Heal would be a better choice.
Dangerously I might add, I haven't bolded any specialist spinners. I could very well be wrong, but maybe the selectors will put their faith in part-timers, Clarke, Symonds, Hodge and D.Hussey. I personally don't think Hodge should be there, but he'll be selected anyway I'm guessing.
Not too many complaints from me about the team selected, the selectors have done a commendable job.
Lastly, nice to see Tassie have got 5 players named in that side. Though I don't reckon anyone apart from Ponting will make the cut, it's good to see that a successful team is being rewarded with players being named in the national team, even though it looks like they won't be there in the end.
