back pain, 20 years old.

A few days ago I bent over to pick something up, and when I tried to straighten my back again to stand up, it was really stiff and it hurt. I was able to slowly straighten it out after a few seconds. Since then I've had the same problem almost every time I bend over (sweeping the floor, petting the dog, taking something out of my backpack). Isn't 20 really young to be having back pain? Is there anything I can do about it, or anything I can do to keep it from getting worse?

Maybe I just don't have as much cartilage as normal people; I've had creaky finger joints for about 8 years... :(

Re: back pain, 20 years old.

Hi Spin and welcome!

Can you locate the pain for me:

If it is midline [say] over the spinal area, is it low down, about waist height or higher?

If not directly midline, is it to the left, right, both sides, and again, how high?

Re: back pain, 20 years old.

It's my whole lower spine, the part that curves inward. Not one side or the other; it feels like the joints between my spine bones are stiff.

Re: back pain, 20 years old.

If this is the case and you are sure the problem is with the lumbar spine and not muscular, your best course of action is to get this checked out by your GP.

I do not wish to worry you, it is purely to eliminate the possibility of a slipped disc. It is not something I can diagnose without seeing you. If it is a slipped disc, the sooner it is sorted, the better.

Whatever it turns out to be, it is not too serious and can be rectified quite easily if you seek assistance early, before it causes other problems.

When you have had it looked at, do come back and we can sort out some cricket specific rehabilitation exercises, whatever the diagnosis.

Spin - Good luck with your back, hope it's not too bad. If you're a Leggie come and join us in the Leg Spin forum and give us your low down on spin bowling - love to hear it.

Re: back pain, 20 years old.

A velcro, strap on back support may be of help to you, it has assisted me greatly for my side.

Re: back pain, 20 years old.

A back support is good if it is muscular [though no substitute for core strength ;)]

However, if it is a spinal problem; don't mess with it, get it sorted before you do anything. Please do come back and let us know what the doc says.
