Bowling follow through Drills

Hi,
In our league(liverpool and district cricket comp) they run a scheme in the off season called the player development program, other leagues probaly do the same thing. This is were every club sends 1 player to have 1-on-1 with a specialist coach, my case bowling. The aim of the course is meant to be a way to "fast track" juniors in the 2nd XI into 1st XI.
The first thing he did was told me to have a few balls, after warming up. He said almost immediatly i was getting my self into an awkward postion when i released the ball, like this
\
l from behind me. So he said we were going to work on me following all the way through and making my follow through continue straight as i was leavin the pitch very early in the follow through. To practice this he made me bowl for 45 mins off a fixed base(back foot contact) and follow through and stay inside a set of cones, I ended up bowling about 60 balls like this and it is very tiring. Towards the end of the session I was getting it 4/5 times right.
I was wondering if there are any drills you know of that I can do to practice this as I in my garden or on the field. I'm asking because I don't want to go this thursday looking like an uncapable idiot and wasting 2 ov my 7 sessions on that 1 thing.

Cheers for having the paitence to read that essay of crap English.

phil

Too right, Liz Ward will probably help you very soon.

Re: Bowling follow through Drills

Hi Phil, how are things going?

I am afraid I can't really help you with drills; the best thing to do is what your coach has you doing ;) From base, I would progress you to a walk through in front of a mirror [if you are on your own] and probably have substitued the ball for a pair of 1kg dumbbells; one in each hand. I would now be concentrating on your arm positioning during follow through.

I am, though, still very concerned about you. Have you corrected your mixed action or is your coach still refusing to help you with this?

Have you grown or are you still 6'2"?

Is your ankle better?

Re: Bowling follow through Drills

hi liz,
well i'm more at 6ft 3 now.... i've gained half a stone ( 12 1/2 stone now)..... the ankle just kind of went on it's own since i started playing badminton.... this wasn't my normal coach he's a specialist bowling coach and he said i was chest-on due to feet and arms etc( he didn't seem to happy about it bein chest on tho:/). I'll give the dumbells ago and i'll post a video on here.

Re: Bowling follow through Drills

This is good Phil. I would love to see a video; just to see how you are progressing but also to check you are totally front on.

I agree with your coach, I too prefer to work with side on bowlers; there is so much more I can do for them in terms of speed. However, having said that, your height and weight are good for a front on bowler and I do not think it will cause you any loss in this area. Do work on building up your upper body though and work on stabilising your lumbar spine :D

Re: Bowling follow through Drills

hi liz,
the lowest weights i have are 5kg. Is that too heavy?

What do you mean about arm positioning when following through?

Re: Bowling follow through Drills

Yes Phil, far too high; you could do yourself a mischief. Grab yourself a couple of baked bean cans or bottles of water/sand... just don't let go of them :D

As for arm positioning, take a look at Jonesy's video. As you let go of the ball, your non-bowling arm should head for the sky behind you [make sure it is straight up.. do not veer left or right], your bowling hand should be about to tickle your opposite arm pit. At this point, your body should be straight * too [everything straight :)], you should be looking at the wicket and heading for it.

* Straight as in facing straight forward... of course, it will be bent forward ;)

Re: Bowling follow through Drills

i was chatting bubbles then liz.... they're 2.4 kg or 5LB... i'll stick with beans though because the diameter feels right for me.

yes i've seen jonesy videos and i can see what you mean and i've just quickly skimmed through "the fast bowlers bible", wish Ian could have put more drills in( i know he has a few like using the door to keep long levers), so i understand what you mean. I'll take a video tomorrow though to see if it's right.

Re: Bowling follow through Drills

I keep promising myself a copy of Ian's book; hopefully Santa will bring one... or I just may hold out for a signed copy :)

Re: Bowling follow through Drills

I had another session on thursdaу and I feel it went better. To start I just had some easу jog in balls and then he put some cones in a corridor to run up through and i was hitting the wicket or hitting a good line and length so i'm going to practice this more often. I was following through how he wanted it more often and regularlу but then he introduced ... well background information, he had been to a seminar/coaching session with ottis gibson and ottis reckons a verу high percent of pace comes from the snapping of the non-bowling arm in to the side but then still following through fullу with the shoulders........ snapping the non-bowling arm into the side and running in with the arms pumping so that mу hands were in peripheral vision.
The problem was it was turning into doing 2/3 of the new things rite but one wrong and it was alwaуs a new combination. Towards the end of the session i was getting it all rite on a few occasions.

Back felt a bit more then "sore" but i was expecting it because i'm using it in a waу i never have before, but it hasn't staуed sore like it used to it's just a bit stiff now.

Anу ideas how i can practice?
Liz i've tried get a video but it's been too icу with all the rain and frost.

Re: Bowling follow through Drills

No worries about the video Phil.. you could do some damage in this weather ;)

It sounds like you are doing well; I can hear the progress. You are obviously not going to get it all right straight away but it really does sound like you are getting it. Just keep an eye on that back of yours [not easy to do unless you are hyper flexible :D]

We shall be able to comment more when we get the video but don't worry too much about it. Ian may have some helpful advice when he gets back to Blighty.
