Broken Wrist - Rehabilitation

Hi,
My 14 yo son bowls leggies, or did until six weeks ago when he broke his wrist on his bowling arm.
I am wondering whether anyone has expertise or experience in these types of injuries, especially in the exercises required to rehabiltate the injury. I've been told that the bone will be stronger then ever but some deterioation in muscle fitness and flexibility will be evident.

He'll want to build it up but also maintain full flexibility. Is bowling leggies a good exercise?

Will be seeing a physio no doubt but wanted to get a heads up and perhaps get some other ideas, especially if someone has experience.

Thanks

Hi Barney and welcome.

Can you tell me a little bit more about the break.

For instance:
How did he do it?
Which bone(s) were broken?
Was he pinned?
What damange to muscles/tendons/ligaments/skin?
Is he out of plaster and ready for full mobility?
I take it your son is a wrist spinner?

You may like to get hold of a powerball as soon as you can.

Thanks for your reply Liz.
Alex broke his radius, about an inch back from the wrist. It was described to us as a dislocation and break, with a large lump on his wrist appearing straight after the fall. It was the result of a bike fall and putting his hand down to brace for the fall.

We were told it was a simple fracture, manipulated back into place in the emergency dept within 30 min and before xrays. The next day, after xrays, further manipulation took place and a full length cast put on. That has since been replaced by a cast below the elbow. We weren't advised of any muscle, tendon or ligaments damaged and the fracture did not break the skin.
He is 10 days away from having the cast removed providing xrays are sound. He has experienced little pain during the recovery phase. He has little exercise with his fingers, perhaps some Play Station control manipulation and typing on a keyboard.

Alex is a very keen wrist spinner, and is keen to get full mobility back asap.

I'm sorry but I'm not sure what a powerball is.

Thanks for your interest.

Re: Broken Wrist - Rehabilitation

A powerball is a toy/gadget that helps to strengthen the wrist. It based on a gyro that spins at up to 17000 revs per minute and the forces it generates help to work the muscles as you hold it.

Re: Broken Wrist - Rehabilitation

Sounds like Alex was very lucky ;)

Such a fall often impacts on the elbow and shoulder; sounds strange but the radius braking probably cushioned the rest!

Alex is in line for a full [quick] recovery and if all goes to plan, there should be little muscle wastage but get him on the powerball as soon as possible. You may like to see http://www.simplycricket.net/improving-grip-t495.30.html

Interestingly, the wrist does not control the spin [although it provides the power]. The wrist does not rotate but relies on two of the three elbow joints (humeroradial and proximal radioulna [the third being humeroulnar]) to glide and pivot. Ask Alex to hold his arm out in front of him, palm facing down and slowly pivot so that the palm is facing up. Does this hurt at all?

When Alex has been given the all clear, get him to bowl carefully, practicing with heavier balls than usual.

If you get a chance, let us know how things go.

Liz and Mas,

Thanks for the info. I'll certainly let you know how things progress. Love the site, still making my way through after reading 52 pages on leg spin. Should've waited for the summary on the new thread. :)
