Cardiff to host first Ashes Test

Glamorgan have pulled off a major coup after the ECB awarded it the opening Ashes Test for next summer.

The announcement is set to be made public on Friday, but the South Wales Echo reports that the first Test is set to get underway at the newly refurbished Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on July 8, which is a Wednesday instead of the traditional Thursday.

From Cricinfo

This will be interesting and possibly effect my chances of getting a ticket as I'm sure there will be a fair bit of interest in the first test.

I wasn't expecting it. I was happy for an Ashes test to be played in Cardiff next year, but I didn't think it would get the first test, taking it away from the traditional venue, Lord's.

I was surprised when I saw it as well, but technically speaking Lord's is traditionally the second test.

That's true, it has just been in recent years it has changed to first test.
