Closing my eyes!!

Hi, first post on the new site! :)

I did some basic catching practice today. I havent touched a cricket ball for 3 months as the uni season finishes early, and for some unknown reason I was closing my eyes at the moment of the ball reaching my hands. My catching standard was average, but I know you're supposed to watch the ball right into the hands.

But I wasnt deliberately closing my eyes..!!!!

Any thoughts?

Re: Closing my eyes!!

Tough one. Are you scared of the ball?

You really need to practice it, start off with a tennis ball, then move onto a windball, then incrediball and lastly a cricket ball. If you break it down into stages it'll help you realise that it's not going to hurt and the different colours will help you to keep focussed on the ball for longer.

Re: Closing my eyes!!

Thanks.

The weird thing though is I have no reason to be afraid of the ball and I didn't use to have this problem of closing my eyes!

I'll try building it up from tennis balls though, plenty of time til next season ;)

Re: Closing my eyes!!

We all close our eyes at the last moment, its a natural reaction but if you're closing them before the ball gets to you then you're going to have problems.

Practice is the key, just get used to the feel of the ball in your hands etc.

Re: Closing my eyes!!

It's natural and essential, we all do it but some do it more or at the wrong time! I always do it when I have my photo taken; no matter how quick or slow it takes for the shutter to do its stuff.

If your tears are less viscous than the norm, you tend/need to blink more. If this is the case, blink when the ball is midway, don't try to keep your eyes wide open the whole way; it could cause infections.

Hi Liz,
Can this be tried when batting as the bowler is about to release the ball.

Re: Closing my eyes!!

Similar principles apply but you have to be more careful when you blink.

It would be hard to blink between delivery and locating the bounce point unless you can reach this point more than 100 m before the ball and I doubt you would want to blink whilst tracking the ball's trajectory.

Perhaps the best strategy would be to blink twice prior to delivery.

Re: Closing my eyes!!

It would be interesting to study just when players do blink in the process of batting and what differences, if any, exisit between elite and club players.
