ECB announce Stanford deal

It seems that the ECB and Allen Stanford have come to an agreement for a 5 winner takes all matches. Each match will have a prize fund of around $20million, which will be split as follows:

Winning XI - $1million each

Rest of squad - $1million shared

Management etc - $1million shared

The other $7million is shared between the ECB and West Indies cricket board, so no-one really loses. The first of these matches will be held on November 1, Antigua Independence Day, before England head to India and will be against a Stanford Invitational XI.

In addition to the 5 winner takes all games, Stanford will also put up US$9.5 million a year for five annual quadrangular events to be held in England from next year. England and West Indies will always be involved in these.

Not quite sure of the merit of all this, but time will tell. I can't see it stopping English players wanting to go to the IPL but I'm sure the ECB have other ideas. At least they can no longer complain about money!

Re: ECB announce Stanford deal

I suppose any money going into the game is good, but just throwing money at players is not a long term solution - England's players will want to play in the IPL sooner or later.

Re: ECB announce Stanford deal

I'd like to think that it's for the competition and playing against other top players as much as the cash.

Re: ECB announce Stanford deal

I wonder how its going to help West Indies but the money should surely help English cricketers(assuming they win all the matches).

Stanford's main aim, or so he says, is to reverse the decline of West Indian cricket.

hmm, that must be how Stanford sees it anyhow, what exactly are his motives for paying so much money??

As manee says, his stated aim is to reverse the decline in West Indian cricket but you'd also say that he's in it for personal gain, such as the publicity as well as the 'fame.

There is thread a little further down which talks about his insistence on using bats painted black, so there may be more to this than meets the eye.

Re: ECB announce Stanford deal

Otherwise it is helping the board and players because money is important to everyone.
Allen Stanford is pumping a lot of money.

I am sure some english players will consider playing in next year's IPL after checkign their international cricketing calendar.

Re: ECB announce Stanford deal

The English players will just be free for about 10 days to participate in the IPL. I could be wrong, but I don't think anyone except Pietersen(who is likely to represent Mumbai) is coming to play.

Yeah, thats what he has claimed, but I fail to see how playing just five matches against a England XI can help West Indies cricket. Had he organized a much bigger competition where the English players would be playing along with the young West Indians in some sort of a domestic competition, it would surely help them more. Having the English players play just five or so matches against them seems pointless.
