Ford Ranger Cup Final: Victoria vs Queensland at MCG

With no significant international cricket on at the moment, all interest turns to the Ford Ranger Cup one-day final which will be played between Victoria and Queensland at the MCG.

Victoria earned the right to host the final after finishing top of the ladder with Queensland winning through due to their second place finish. The Vics have won their last five games while Queensland have been struggling as of late losing two out of their last three matches.

Fortunately for Queensland, they have won the the two previous encounters against the hosts.

Cricket Australia have decided to rest all World Cup participants from this game leaving Victoria without Brad Hodge and Queensland will not have Mitchell Johnson or Shane Watson in the team. Matthew Hayden won't play for Queensland either because of his toe injury. Queensland captain Jimmy Maher criticised this move by CA stating that Johnson and Watson lack match practice and this game represents an ideal opportunity for them to gain more match fitness.

Scott Brant and Nathan Reardon come into the Queensland squad with Brant to make his One-day Domestic (ODD) debut should he play in this match. Brant played in all of Queensland's Twenty20 Big Bash matches earlier in the season.

This game promises to be a cracker. Both teams have done very well in the one-day arena and it all comes down to this game to see who will be the Ford Ranger Cup champions.

Re: Ford Ranger Cup Final: Victoria vs Queensland at MCG

Queensland have progressed to 2/222 after 43 overs (just imagine Richie saying that!). Captain Jimmy Maher was out a short time ago for 108, the mainstay of Queensland's good innings to date. James Hopes was out early for 30 with Clinton Perren still at the crease on 69.

Craig Philipson is the new batsmen. For the Vics, Darren Pattinson has both wickets and has 2/49 off his 10 overs. Shane Harwood is the only other bowler to have bowled well.

Re: Ford Ranger Cup Final: Victoria vs Queensland at MCG

Queensland made 5/274 after their 50 overs. Perren was out not long after for 75 with Philipson unbeaten on 22.

The Vics started well but then lost Michael Klinger and Jon Moss not long after each other after getting starts. More wickets fell which brought David Hussey and Andrew McDonald to the crease and together they added 82 runs for the 5th wicket before Hussey departed. By this stage, Victoria needed nine runs an over with only a couple of recognized batsmen remaining.

After that, that was pretty much it for Victoria, each new batsmen came out swinging with many losing their wicket trying to slog their way to victory. Blizzard, Crosthwaite, and Pattinson all suffered the same fate with the exception being Shane Harwood who was bowled first ball.

And it was left to Andrew McDonald but even after a stellar season so far he couldn't get Victoria over the line.

They got to 9/253 after their 50 overs, falling 21 runs short.

Man of the Match was Jimmy Maher for his century with Matthew Elliott of South Australia winning player of the series.

Queensland are the Ford Ranger Cup champions for season 2006/2007.

Thought that it might of been tough for the vics. No hodge = no vics.
Not against the reasoning on why these guys weren't given a chance to play for their state but I am against the way how the vics played.
