Group Permutations

I've done what I can to figure out what teams need to do in order to advance to the super 8s. Just so people can know who to cheer for to get their team through!

Group A

Simple enough - South Africa and Australia are already on 4 points, and they are going through. Scotland and the Netherlands are on 0 and are going home. The South Africa v Australia match on Saturday will decide who takes points through.

Group B

This is the toughest group to figure out because it is one match shy of the
others at this point. I reserve the right to calculate the permutations tomorrow evening after the Sri Lanka v Bangladesh match is played.

Group C

New Zealand are on 4 points and going through with points. Canada are on 0 points and going home. England and Kenya play on Saturday, with the winner going through and the loser going home.

Group D

West Indies are through, Pakistan are going home.

Ireland can book a spot by winning or tying against West Indies. If Ireland lose to West Indies, Zimbabwe can go through with a win over Pakistan and gaining a net 0.39 over Ireland between their final matches.

I'm superhyped for the end of the group stage, and the beginning of the Super8.

Yes it has. I took up the game 1.5 years ago and my intial introduction was the 2005 Ashes, which was awesome. Ireland beating Pakistan and hopefully making the Super 8 is more that I could have ever expected. With the cricket seaon here in Northeast USA starting soon, this is the perfect way to get motivated to kick some arse. The Irish fans really seem to be a fun bunch based on the google video's I have seen

I concur, an exciting World Cup it's been a lot of unexpectations.

Unfortunately, the Bob Woolmer thing has been a big downer. Irrespective of actual quality of play in the fields, personally for me it is all overshadowed by that. :(

Re: Group Permutations

Alright getting closer to the end, time to revisit this.

Group A

South Africa and Australia are going through. The match on Saturday will serve as the first game of the Super 8 for both teams, making it quite important.

Group B

Technically, all 4 teams are still alive. But for Bermuda to have any hope, all manner of stupid ridiculous impossible things would have to happen - not the least of which woudl be them winning a game.

Sri Lanka are through, for sure. If Sri Lanka beat India tomorrow, they guarantee themselves taking points forward. That also gives Bangladesh a chance to advance with a win over Bermuda. If India were to beat Sri Lanka, Bangladesh could still advance with a thumping (read: 250+ run) win over Bermuda. Should India win tomorrow and advance, they would take the points forward into the super 8.

Group C

New Zealand were the class of this group, and are through with points.

England and Kenya will meet on Saturday to decide who joins New Zealand in the super 8. If that match were to be tied, England would go through on NRR.

Group D

West Indies and Ireland are going through. They meet tomorrow, in what will serve as the first Super 8 match for both teams.

So 2 groups are settled, and 2 are still to be decided. Even those that are decided have big matches coming up, to decide who takes a valuable 2 points forward into the Super 8. It's only going to get better.

Re: Group Permutations

Group B is very interesting, Local media has it the Bermuda team are going all out for a win over Bangladesh, a no holds barred approach. Their last match they want to go out with a bang. They seem very confident that they will win the last game. However it remains to be seen if it happens. I still like to remain hopeful though :D

Not sure if that was intentional, but I chuckled. In any case, it will be quite difficult for Bermuda to win, but the situation may give them a chance to do so. If Bangladesh need to, say, chase a target of 150 in 12 overs to get enough NRR, they will play hyperaggressively. If the Bermuda bowlers bowl straight....

Are you sure about that? I find it hard to believe that a 250 run win would be enough. I'm pretty sure Bangladesh would have to be the first team to score 500 if they want to advance on run rate after an India win.

Re: Group Permutations

Well, it would depend on the number of runs each side score and the number overs. It will likely be more than 250 run margin required. I cna calculate it tonight. Needless to say it will be ridiculously high.

Re: Group Permutations

Take a look at this article.
Should India win today, it would be virtually identical to "Scenario 1".

okay, I just did some quick math

If Bangladesh were to beat Bermuda 489 to 50, for a whopping 439-run victory margin, that should be just about enough to get them past India's run rate.
