Intercontinental Cup FINAL, Ireland v Canada (2006 Cup)

Well, the final of the 2006 Intercontinental Cup is finally about to get underway.

It will start in 6 hours.

All signs point to an Ireland win. They looked far better in the World Cup, and they seem to have had far more competent preparations for this match.

Apparently they're letting fans in free for this match, but I'm sure that the place will still be empty. Hopefully some Irish turn up.

Re: Intercontinental Cup FINAL, Ireland v Canada (2006 Cup)

What promised to be a good game has turned into a one-sided contest so far. Ireland won the toss and decided to bowl first, a decision that has been well justified so far.

Canada sit at 6/55 with all their specialist batsmen bar one sitting back in the shed. Ex South-Australian player John Davison was out for a first-ball duck with all the other batsmen falling cheaply bar Ashish Bagai who made 29.

Trent Jonston is the pick of the bowlers, he has 3/12.

Pretty insipid effort from Canada here. They're 9/75 at lunch.

The Irish bowlers have totally destroyed them. Trent Johnston has 3/12, Thinus Fourie has 3/18, Kevin O'Brien has 2/0 with Dave Langford-Smith picking up the other wicket.

Umar Bhatti is only other batsmen to reach double figures, he's not out on 14.

Re: Intercontinental Cup FINAL, Ireland v Canada (2006 Cup)

Canada all out for 92. Bhatti finishes on 22 not out with no-one else managing to get double figures.

Johnston finishes with the impressive figures of 4/12 off 9.4 overs.

Oh Canada.

What a blowout. Ireland is 97-0 at tea!!! They already lead by 5 runs.
Bray leads the way with 71, and Porterfield has added 24.

Ireland should declare now, they might not have to bat again. :p

This is what happens when you play the final nearly a year after the preliminary matches.

Re: Intercontinental Cup FINAL, Ireland v Canada (2006 Cup)

And Bray gets his century. He's up to 101

Ireland is 147-0 after 35 overs.

There should be at least 20 more overs today, so expect Ireland to be well over 200 by the end of the day. Perhaps even closing in on 250.

Re: Intercontinental Cup FINAL, Ireland v Canada (2006 Cup)

Well, this sucks. I was hoping for at least a competitive match, but with all the cricket and non-cricket elements heading up to it I guess this was to be expected. The Irish have more experience on green wickets, more games under their belt (against TOP competition) recently. The Canadians had travel issues and haven't played in some time.

Oh well, we'll get'em next year. err....later this year? Next month?

Re: Intercontinental Cup FINAL, Ireland v Canada (2006 Cup)

Bray out for 146, Porterfield out for 54

Morgan and Gillespie have slowed it down a little.
Ireland 215-2 after 52 overs.

Looks like the 2007-08 version of Ireland and Canada won't be played until 2008.

So at least there was some smart scheduling there.

Re: Intercontinental Cup FINAL, Ireland v Canada (2006 Cup)

Ireland finish Day 1 at 250-3 after 62 overs.

Their lead is already up to 158.

What an incredibly one-sided final!

Re: Intercontinental Cup FINAL, Ireland v Canada (2006 Cup)

Hat Trick!!!

Umar Bhatti picked up three straight lbw decisions this morning!
And in fact, he got wickets with 4 out of 5 balls.
Ireland dropped from 297-3 to 303-7.

Ireland finished 352 all out, with Eoin Morgan scoring 84, the second highest score behind Jeremy Bray.

Re: Intercontinental Cup FINAL, Ireland v Canada (2006 Cup)

Canada has begun their second innings, and after a slightly brighter start, it looks like they're crumbling just like in their first innings. Trent Johnston just took his third wicket of the day.

Canada 58-4 after 15.3 overs.

They still trail by 202 runs, now clearly an insurmountable lead, with the likes of Davison and Barnett already back in the pavillion.

Re: Intercontinental Cup FINAL, Ireland v Canada (2006 Cup)

Didn't get much better for Canada at all. They were bowled out for 145 by Ireland, meaning the game finished in less than two days. A pretty disappointing effort as far as Canada are concerned.

Ashif Mulla made 48 for the Canadians and Davison scored 28 at the top of the order but that was about it.

Kyle McCallan ripped through the Canadian batting line-up with his off-spinners, taking 5/34, Trent Johnston finished with 3/47.

An easy win for the Irish in the end, the margin being an innings and 115 runs in their favour with them being the winners of the 2006 ICC Intercontinental Cup.

Jeremy Bray was Man of the Match.

Great stuff from the Irish, I'd like to see how they go against Bangladesh in the longer form of the game.

And Zimbabwe too. That would probably be a closer match.

It still looks like Ireland is taking things slowly and in measured steps. They're not begging for test status immediately or anything like that. Their next step is to make all their players professionals and actually pay the poor fellas. It sounds like they have some decent plans to do that, so lets hope they work out sooner rather than later.

Another big plus for Ireland is that they have quite a few ODI's scheduled over the next few months. It won't be a case of having a good World Cup and then not playing any cricket at all for the next few years. They've got quite a few matches coming up, and they'll have every opportunity to continue their fine form.
