Is it in my head or real!!

 I have been playing club cricket for over 20 years, up until about 3-4 years ago I was classed as an all rounder. I used to get plenty of wickets and average about 35 in a season.

However in the last few years my batting has crashed big time, my main problem seems to be actually watching the ball, I can't seem to pick it up early enough?

I don't know if it is coincidence but this is also about the time I started wearing a lid? Could this affect me or am I just getting older!

My bowling does not seem to change much at all, does anybody have any tips on picking the ball up etc.

It is getting a bit depressing, yesterday I was clean bowled first ball by a fast ball that a few years ago i would have driven easily and i did not see it!!

Re: Is it in my head or real!!

May well be confidence. I'm having similar issues, my batting has just gone. Finding that the more time at the crease I have helps and yesterday was the best for a long time.

Would have to say that you need to back yourself and play as positively as you're able to. If you've only just started wearing a lid then wear it as much as possible to get used to it, even round the house if you have to. Might feel silly but it will help it to become more natural feeling.

As for picking the ball up, try getting a few different colour balls and have a friend throw them at you. You have to call the colour out as soon as you pick it. This can help with hand to eye co-ordination.

Re: Is it in my head or real!!

I have known this to happen for either reason gentleone.

As mas says, it could be confidence; poor performance can easily breed poor performance.

It could also be physical. Take yourself back 3 or 4 years, did you suffer any kind of trauma? Either an obvious injury or a car shunt/accident?

Did you change your bat/Club at this time?

It could even be a deeper psychological issue, such as a death in the family.

Re: Is it in my head or real!!

The other thing might be eyesight - have you had it checked lately? I know a few people who suffered batting slumps linked to eye problems, once they got glasses/contacts/laser surgery etc they started to pick the ball up a lot better.

Re: Is it in my head or real!!

I did wonder if it was my eyes, but have sight tests every 6 Months as I wear contacts and no change.

Is there any advice on where you should try and watch the ball from. I have read that some people think you should watch it all the way from the start of the run up but others pick it up much later maybe from the top of the bowling action.

I am prepared to give anything a go!

Re: Is it in my head or real!!

I am going to send you something. When you have had a chance to read it, come back to this thread and let me know what you think.

Hi Craig,

As u mentioned that for couple of years u had trouble batting.
Maybe relaxing would help u.
Switching off for few days away from cricket might help u unwind and then u can come back and started with a fresh mind and enthusiasm.
I had the similar problem last season and for few days i skipped practice and a match.
Helped me to unwind and came back with a fresh mind.

 Well went to nets and felt really good, was hitting it in the middle no worries. Came to the match Saturday 1st ball leg spinner bowled me a full toss missed it totally out LBW first ball...........

No runs this year yet and it is getting me down, I am wondering if I should pack it all in for a few weeks and come back fresh. No doubt that my confidence is now in my boots! :cursing:
