Knots or Nots?

Liz,

me again, since ive been snowboarding ive been suffering from dull pains or aches in my shoulder:Left

I have a friend who is a physio but i'm not sure what she says is right. Or whether she really just cant be bothered to help me.

I seem to get two Nots (knots? not sure on spelling) i think if i am correct its in the Trapezius muscle, it feels like a small lump in the muscle, When my friend comes round she releases it for me and it sends a painright up the side of my neck past my ear and is painfull till it releases the Knot?

Is there a way of stretching this to avoid these Knots or a way of releasing them myself? like now its kind of a dull ache...

reason i mentioned snowboarding was i had a fall and landed on my shoulder (left one) and its not quite been the same since.

thanks

Re: Knots or Nots?

How long have you been snowboarding and when did you take the fall?

Did you get knots before the fall?

How often do you snowboard?

When did you last snowboard?

Is the right side totally free of pain and/or discomfort?

Do you get any tingling sensation down your left arm?

Sorry for all the questions :D

Re: Knots or Nots?

been snowboarding for about 3 years:

Did you get knots before the fall?

yes but not this bad

How often do you snowboard?

1-2 times a year

When did you last snowboard?

February

Is the right side totally free of pain and/or discomfort?

yes

Do you get any tingling sensation down your left arm?

i did when i came back from snowboarding but once the know was released it has not tingled since. Now it just aches a little.

Re: Knots or Nots?

Sorry, more questions :D

Did you have any discomfort before you took up snowboarding?

When you snowboard, how long (one/two weeks?) and how many hours a day?

When did you fall?

Re: Knots or Nots?

to be honest i have only been playing cricket competitivly for last 3 years after 6 year break. started snowboarding around the same time. so i cant remember whether it was before or not.

usually snowboard for a week at a time. took the fall in february of this year. took a jump dug the front of the board in on landing and slammed onto my ribs / shoulder.

Re: Knots or Nots?

I am not 100% convinced that your problem is caused by snowboarding. It is clearly made worse by it and the fall did not help but I think the cause is elsewhere.

Do you have a winter break from cricket or do you play/train all year round?

Re: Knots or Nots?

pretty much train all year, few weeks break over xmas. I dont think it was or is casued by snowboarding. Just need to know if i can do anything to A: Rectify the problem now and B: in the future?
;)

Re: Knots or Nots?

Definitely; we just need to get to the bottom of the cause.

I am sure you can see where I am going with this :D

Is there any way you can send me a video of you keeping?

If you can, send it to my email address, I can analyse it better there.

Re: Knots or Nots?

I dont have any video, can try and take some tonight at training? i do have some photo's somewhere? if they are any good

Re: Knots or Nots?

Re: Knots or Nots?

It would help if I could see you move. If you can get a video, it would be great if I could see a few balls from side and front view.

It is clear from the pictures that you have tight pecs [and I am betting tight hip flexors and hamstrings].

Re: Knots or Nots?

LIz,

what about shooting? ive been shooting competitivley since i was 15 (now 24) i'm predominatley right handed, so i support with my left arm / Hand. Could that have any impact on my left shoulder? or affect it in any way?

more on the posture?

Re: Knots or Nots?

Bingo!

If it is the left traps, it is more than likely caused by shooting. Are we talking pistol/hand gun?

How far up and down the traps do you feel the pain?

Re: Knots or Nots?

the knot which I can feel is about 1/2 way up from shoulder to neck!

Its more rifle these days, do some lbp (long barrel pistol) but not often.

Re: Knots or Nots?

This is a posture problem and there is not anything you can do with regard stretching/exercises to help until you correct the posture.

How often do you shoot?
How long is each session?
Do you ever use automatics?
Do you have any pictures of you shooting?

Re: Knots or Nots?

Liz,

i shoot every friday, and each competition lasts about an hour, on a regular friday night i shoot one competition, if i shoot at a weekend event i could be shooting all day from 10 to 5 few details each lasting about 30 - 60 mins.

Sadly we are not allowed automatics in the uk or handguns under 18" since the dunblane incident.

during various details we also shoot various positions. so:

Strong handed standing (right handed for me , left handed support)
Kneeling
Sitting
Prone (lying down)

i will see if i have any pics, but it depends which of my guns i'm using, My .22 rifle is very light weighs about 6lbs maybe 7lb with scope. its very light as it has a carbon fibre barrel so no front weight here is a pic

My marlin underlever is a bit heavier, carries abit more weight up front with scope around 10lbs.

i will see if i can find any other pics

Re: Knots or Nots?

It sounds like there is some strong muscle imbalance here. Photos or video, [back, side and front] would be great.

Re: Knots or Nots?

i will try and get video over the weekend. sadly we had a poor turn out for training last night!
