Lara Retires

Brian Lara has announced that Saturday's match against England will be his last ever international game. Saturday's game will be his 299th ODI and won't get the opportunity to reach 300 unless he reverses his decision.

Saturday will be a pretty sad day for many cricket fans around the world. One of the best modern-day batsmen will call it quits and I think it will be a pretty emotional day.

Lara retires from International Cricket

Re: Lara Quits

My favourite cricketer calls it a day, very sad indeed.

But I am glad that he didn't continue playing below elite level and left with some sort of dignity. What a terrific player, will always be remembered

Re: Lara Quits

Brilliant batsman, Lara on song was one of the greatest sights ever seen in cricket. I will always remember his 277 in Sydney. He's played better and larger innings, but that special moment when he stated his intent to the world was a glorious sight to behold.

While I think he should have retired years ago, I still have mixed emotions about the circumstances surrounding his retirement.

Lara mentioned just a few weeks ago that he was looking forward to the England tour. Now he's suddenly retiring. Consider that just recently Lara took part in the selection of the WI team to tour England, but then he was told after attending selection meetings that his input was not needed since he would not be captain of the team - some rumours suggest he was even told he wouldn't be going as a player.

Typical classlessness and ineptitude from the WICB.

His retirement combined with the Windies poor showing at the WC held on home turf befits a greek tragedy. Lara the flawed genius who has been accused of destroying West Indies cricket can now ride into the sunset, his bitter detractors like Michael Holding with their crab in the barrel mentality now have no scapegoat to blame and have lost their convenient villian.

One can only hope Sarwan is strong enough to take the presshah.....and won't have to sigh in despair that cricket is ruining his life.

Well there goes a cricket hero indeed. Lara would always be remembered for his great accomplishments in cricket. There will never be another Brian Lara, a true gentleman, I remember when he visited Bermuda a few years back and how he was overawed by his Bermuda fans. A first class batsman, no doubt. I'm sure he's left his mark on the younger players coming after him. It would be nice is he remained involved in the game ie coaching. But reading what Sunstroke had to say about the WICB and their attitude maybe not.

Re: Lara Retires

I felt disappointed and angry at the amount of media coverage his retirement got. I think I saw one story about it in The West - a few pages in - and one tiny ten second story on the news.

I mean this guy was an amazing cricketer and so entertaining but the media here showed him no respect. I don't care if he's not Aussie - and they jump up and down when an Aussie retires - he deserved to be treated as a champion.

That's the end of my rant and my first ever post here.
