Left back burning

Hi,

Was wondering if it is normal to get a burning sensation in the back after doing boxing/chin ups in the left side of the upper back (latismus dorsi, I believe) and is the only course of action to stretch it beforehand and ice after - as it doesn't seem to be helping much.

Thanks

FBI.

Re: Left back burning

Well, it happens every time that I do chin ups or boxing and although this won't be an issue in the off season because I'm not going to be using the muscles then, it can't be good. It is aching a bit from boxing on Monday but the pain does fade away pretty quickly and is usually gone by a week.

Re: Left back burning

What concerns me is that it is just your left side. Any exercise that challenges your muscles will cause DOMs but this should not be 'burning'.

Chin ups will work your lats so I would expect them to feel 'used' but it should be on both sides, not just the left.

Again, with boxing you should jab, cut, hook, uppercut etc equally with both arms so if you feel any muscle ache, it should be on both sides.

I suspect you need to be looking to your technique.

Added 1 minute(s) and 24 second(s) later...

BTW, the offseason is when you should be working these muscles most!

Re: Left back burning

Okay, I will look at my technique. I know I should be working most in the off season, but I do enjoy a nice go on the heavy bag every so often.

Re: Left back burning

I think you should be boxing during the season [as long as it is not one sided] but you said you would not be working these muscles during off season... keep it up all through the year and increase during off season if you can, not cut back and remember your footwork.

Do you remember the lats stretch I gave you some time ago? If so, do it dynamically before you stand up to the bag and develop it afterwards.

Re: Left back burning

Okay, thanks. BTW, about the off season, I meant that I'm not going to be playing in the off season so it doesn't matter if I feel aches.
