Lower Back Pain

Hi, yeh I've been having pain in the left side of my lower back for a week or two now. Is it because of a mixed action? I've seen some pictures of myself bowling, and I seem to fall over to the left hand side after I bowl it, it doesn't affect my bowling but I will attempt to fix it up in the off season. Anyway, is there anything that can be done to help relieve me of the pain, because it kinda restricts me when I'm bowling a bit and hurts when I get up or bend down in certain ways. Dad reckons it might be a knot in my umm, i forget, qutlurdon s-something? I dunno what it technicality is, but basically it means four-sided muscle in your lower back. He gave me acupuncture and a massage today, it helped a bit but it's still there, and acupuncture takes a few sessions to improve it. By the end of this week I'll be owing him a few hundred bucks for the acupuncture sessions, lol, nah, but is there anything I can do to help prevent pain and get rid of the injury?

Re: Lower Back Pain

Could it be Quadratus Lumborum?

As for mixed action, could be, but I would need to see it. ;)

It could be the falling away, but again, I would need to see it. Though I would expect it to hurt elsewhere.

If it is a mixed action, no amount of acupuncture or massage will rectify the pain although it will help ease it. You would need to sort it out before it causes a stress fracture.

You have not changed your action recently though have you? Have you increased intensity recently?

If you have a good coach, get them to check for a mixed action. If not, try and post a video.

Re: Lower Back Pain

Yeh, that's the one, haha thanks.

Ah ok, nah I don't think that I've changed my action or increased my intensity lately.

I might be able to post a video of myself this week, I got my camera, woot.

Yeah I'll check with my coach but I'll also see if I can take the video.

Re: Lower Back Pain

If your action and intensity of practise has not changed recently, I doubt it is a mixed action but best to get it checked out.

It is most probably caused by either a trapped nerve [which your Dad would be able to sort out] or you may have just worked the muscle wrong or twisted awkwardly, in which case a good massage would help [poor Dad again :D ].

Do you remember what you were doing just before you felt the pain?

Re: Lower Back Pain

Nah sorry I don't remember, sorry.

Haha yeh, dad is fully booked all day everyday and has to come home with complaints from me about my back haha.

For the video, what angles? behind, mid on, batsman?

Re: Lower Back Pain

If possible, a couple side on and a couple front on [batsman]. I prefer to see at least two to eliminate anomalies and I look for different things from the different angles. Try and get the whole body in, feet and head.

I also prefer my subjects [victims] to wear as little as possible ie, just shorts but feel free to wear a tight T-shirt or undershirt [base wear] :D . This is just so that I can see what the muscles are doing as well as the joints.

Re: Lower Back Pain

Ok, will do. Had a 1.30 hour acupuncture session on both my back and my neck. My neck apparently was really really tight, and sore. Good news is, I didn't feel pain in my back much today, and when I did it was a lot more dull. At cricket training I felt it maybe first ball and maybe 1 throw, but the rest it was fine. So, I'm really pleased.

I will still post a video if I can just to make sure, but the more I think about it, the more I think I may have a mixed action.

Re: Lower Back Pain

Tight necks, pecs, hip flexors and hams are common in guys your age... its all down to posture ;)

You may find your problems are due to muscle imbalances.

The best advice I can give to any young guy, not only to prevent injury, but improve performance is have a check list of important factors and check them every 30 mins. For this reason the list should be quite short; in fact, I can cut it down to three points: posture, posture and posture :D
