my backs still mincing me

hi, my back is still mincing me and it's getting me down.
I'm undecided between if its golf or cricket so i'm posting a clip off youtube of me bowling.
the questions i would like answering are Is my bowling the reason for my back pain and Am i side on or chest on or mid way or mixed..... What can i do 2 improve? YouTube - Bowling action

Hi Phil,

If you can get a front view video, I would really appreciate it.

From what I can see at the moment, your bowling is causing your back issues, however, this does not mean that your golf swing does not also contribute and if possible, get this looked at too.

Back to bowling... you have a really good 'side on' top half, unfortunately, your bottom half is not. I would really like to see you bowl a few more times and from the front to be sure but it looks, at the moment, that you are more 'front on' than 'mid way'. Whichever, I am afraid to say you have a mixed action.

On top of this, you hyperextend your back too much with too much lateral flexion. Together with the counter rotation, you are killing your back; putting far too much stress on your lumbar interarticularis (lower back).

Try to pause your video at 18s, here you will see the 'banana' shape.

OK a few pointers:

Keep your head straight.

Keep your spine straight and upright.

Your non-bowling arm is good but you should be looking through or slightly to the right.

Strengthen your rotator cuff muscles. These will be challenged enormously as you mimic the action of a trebuchet, which you must master. The forces applied to these muscles are huge.

Your front leg is really good, well braced, but you swing your back foot out as you follow through. Try to bring this leg straight through like a pendulum from the back to the front.

Try this Phil and let me know how you get on.

How can you tell my rotator cuffs need strenghtenin from the video, or are you just issueing it as general advice....

is my action to be blunt just crap?
Should I change it and get a video of the changed one?

Well, it is general advice, particularly to front on bowlers but it is noticeable that the right supraspinatus is not working 100%. This will have a knock on effect with the subscapularis, infraspinatus and teres minor which will work to overcompensate. Anyhoo, you will need strengthened rotator cuffs for throwing.

Apart from the mixed action, your bowling is great. I know that does not sound terribly helpful but there is so much good here.

The main thing you need to correct is looking to the right of your non bowling arm. Work on this, retake the video and we'll see how you're getting on. If you get this right [oh, and the back foot flick - but that's for pace and accuracy rather than the back issue] everything else may fall into place :)

A lot better Phil, though I lose your top half in the Sun a bit early.

Having seen this, you are definitely front on :).

I want you to try something for me:

As your arm comes over in the trebuchet action [which is really good], I want you to pretend you have a football in front of your right foot and you have to kick it, as straight as possible, for 20 metres. You need to keep upright and watch the trajectory of the football, not the cricket ball.

It will feel awkward for a while but when you've got it, take another video.
