Re: NEED YOUR HELP

I'll start off with the bat as that has the potential to be the most complicated.

Size - two ways to find the correct size:

1. Using a height and size guide -

BAT-SIZE-GUIDE.gif

2. Put your bottom hand behind your back. Then with your top hand (left hand for a right handed batsman) hold the bat. If you can fully extend your arm arm downwards without the bat hitting the ground hard or having to bend your elbow then the bat is the right size. If you had to bend the elbow then the bat is too big.

Grains -The theory is that the more grains a bat has then the better it will play. However, the trade off is that the bat may not last as long as one with less grains. The ideal number for a club level player is about 8 grains.

English Willow vs Kashmir - English willow is by far and away the best wood you can get for a cricket bat. Kashmir willow tends to be drier (due to where it's grown) and because of that it can be harder (less rebound) and more brittle.

If you can afford it go for English Willow but if you can only afford the lowest quality English willow then there is no harm in having a look at the top quality Kashmir bats, as you may gain in terms of playability.

Pick up and balance - This is all to do with where the weight is in the bat. The balance (also called the middle) is literally where the balancing point of the bat is. Pick up is do with how the bat feels when you pick it up - bats of the same weight range can feel heavier or lighter depending on where the balancing point is.

For example:

bat123.jpg

If the balance point of the bat was where the red dot is, you would expect the bat to feel heavier than if the balance point was at the green dot. For most people the area around the blue dots would be a good compromise in terms of pick up etc. If you were to buy a bat then decide you didn't like the pick-up, you can alter it slightly by adding a 2nd grip, as this moves the balance point slightly higher up the bat.

Generally speaking, the balance point will also be where the majority of the 'meat' of the bat is. So, if you feel you're a bit of a slogger then you may want a bat with a lower middle in order to get more speed on the swing, if you're a stroke maker go for a higher pick up so you can pick the bat up quicker and play more shots.

I think the above is a good starting point but if you want further explanations or more info, just ask.

Re: NEED YOUR HELP

Helmets are always a personal choice, you need to try some on and wear which ever one is the most comfortable for you! everyones heads are different.

Re: NEED YOUR HELP

I agree totally with Stumped on the above. As long as the helmet confirms to your countries relevant safety standards (in the UK it's (BS7928:1998)) then it's a matter of comfort.

If your country hasn't got a standard for helmets then I would look for ones that carry the UK standard, so you know that they have been tested and are fit for the job intended.

If you can, try on a few helmets to check out the size, making sure they are not too loose nor too tight.

Best known makes are Masuri and Albion but most cricket companies produce their own brands of helmet, so you do have a bit of choice.

Gloves - pretty much a matter of personal choice, for example, many people swear that the 'sausage' finger design is the best others (like myself) prefer the 'squarer' design.

Any well known brand is going to give you the protection you need, so it's a matter of getting a pair that fit correctly and that you're happy to wear.

Re: NEED YOUR HELP

do they get them in canada?

Gloves are very much like helmets its a comfort thing! i settled on Puma as they were the most comfortable for me!

Re: NEED YOUR HELP

I know of one or two shops that will export to Canada but it costs a fortune to do so.

Correct thread this time!

Re: NEED YOUR HELP

you should get Mozilla firfox so u have tabs instead of windows and thanks guys and so when i go to the store ill keep those points in my mind is there any more points i need to noe.

Re: NEED YOUR HELP

is that 11 or 12 grains? :D

Ag23 u can have tabs on IE as well! Oh and safari!

Invest in the best you can afford for a bat! If your only starting out 8 decent straight grains will be fine!
