New Zealand v Sri Lanka 1st Twenty20

Well, they're playing a Twenty20 today, and the Kiwis have brought in a bunch of new faces to give them a shot at international competition.

Check out the squads:

New Zealand McCullum, Fleming, Franklin, Taylor, Astle, J Marshall, McGlashan, Adams, Bond, Gillespie, Patel

Sri Lanka Tharanga, Jayasuriya, M Jayawardene, Sangakkara, Atapattu, Silva, Kapugedera, Maharoof, Vaas, Fernando, Murali

Its basically the full Sri Lanka team versus half of the New Zealand team.

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 1st Twenty20

New Zealand chose to bat, though that may not have been a good decision. They were restricted to 162-8 from their 20 overs. Which is pretty bad, considering that McCullum and Fleming had a great opening partnership of 80 tuns in the first 8 overs. To only reach 162 from there is pretty disappointing.

Lame!

Sri Lanka 62-1 after 5.5 overs, and the match is called due to rain.
Apparently that's enough for a Twenty20 though, as Sri Lanka have officially won via the DL method.

Too bad, because Jayasuriya was on a tear too, scoring his 50 off just 23 balls.

At least Twenty20's are good for some fun. Too bad the rain ruined it.

Mark Richardson: "Murali is using all those 15 degrees..."

At least the kiwis are man enough to say it :D

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 1st Twenty20

The opening Twenty20 cricket international between New Zealand and Sri Lanka came to an early end here with play abandoned because of rain as the tourists mounted a fiery run charge. Under the Duckworth-Lewis system, Sri Lanka won by 18 runs when the heavy rain forced players from the field.

After a rollicking start by Stephen Fleming and Brendon McCullum produced 80 runs in seven overs, New Zealand's batting faltered and they added just 82 runs in the remaining 13 overs. New Zealand's opening onslaught came to an end when Farveez Maharoof bowled Fleming for 38 with a slower ball. Spin twins Muttiah Muralitharan and Jayasuriya applied the pressure and the run rate slowed to a crawl.

Man-of-the-match, Sanath Jayasuriya led Sri Lanka's reply with a near-solo masterpiece, hitting a rapid 51 in 23 balls, including 10 fours and one six, to score all but 11 of Sri Lanka's 62 runs. The only wicket to fall in Sri Lanka's run chase was that of Tharanga, who was caught by Fleming off the bowling of Bond for six.

The second and final Twenty20 match is at Auckland on December 26 and the first of the five one-day internationals is at Napier on December 28.
