Safe for Australia to tour Pakistan?

Professor Clive Williams from Macquarie University's Centre for Policing, Intelligence and Counter-Terrorism doesn't think so.

An Australian professor in intelligence and counter-terrorism believes Australia should not tour Pakistan next month. An Australian security check is scheduled for the country after the elections on February 18 and if it occurs a decision on whether it is safe for the team to make the Test and one-day trip will be made.

The professor Clive Williams, who is from Macquarie University's Centre for Policing, Intelligence and Counter-Terrorism, told the Sydney Morning Herald he would not go if he was in Australia's position. "It is a fairly volatile situation in Pakistan at the moment," Williams, a specialist in national security and Pakistan affairs, told the paper.

"It is not really clear where things will go. I don't think it would be advisable to go, it would be very dangerous. We have got troops in Afghanistan, and while Pakistan are cricket lovers, one way to create news and instability would be to target foreign visitors, especially given we have got an involvement in the war."

PCB has already finalized the venues and refused to move the series to a neutral venues. What do you guys think? Should Australia tour Pakistan?

Re: Safe for Australia to tour Pakistan?

well i think they should....there is not much security danger because the terrorists arent there to attack cricketers...

Re: Safe for Australia to tour Pakistan?

I think it would be better to play in IPL for Australian players and earn more money than go to Pakistan in this situation.

Bad, bad, bad idea. This would almost say that club cricket is more important than international and money is the key thing for all involved.

Even if it is at neutral venues then this series must be played.

Re: Safe for Australia to tour Pakistan?

according to the reports the situation isnt too good in pakistan so there are less chances of tour going ahead. the security of the players is most important so i dont think it should go ahead if there is any doubt.

Re: Safe for Australia to tour Pakistan?

According to this report, Pakistan are considering inviting India for a quick ODI series if Australia pull out. I don't think thats a good idea. The recently concluded series between the two teams was hardly exciting. People won't too interested in watching them play so soon. Also, the Indian team doesn't have time to play the series. I think the only options they have are Kenya or Ireland as most other teams seem to be busy during that time.

Re: Safe for Australia to tour Pakistan?

i belive its going to get cancelled. most australian players have shown more interest in playing ipl than going to pakistan which might be unsafe. i think they should have considered a neutral venue but since it would not earn them much money they overlooked it.

Re: Safe for Australia to tour Pakistan?

As I suspected, BCCI have declined PCB's offer of a quick ODI series between India and Pakistan. Can't say its the wrong move. India have an important home series against South Africa so they need some rest before that.

Re: Safe for Australia to tour Pakistan?

Guys, lets get one thing right here - Terrorists don't attack cricketers, they attack anything or anyone that will highlight their plight, cause or extremist view.

I am an very experienced in terrorism and I to believe the Australians should not tour Pakistan, not only due to the terrorist threat, but the political unrest at present. England were put in a similar position with Zimbabwe during the World Cup in South Africa.

What really is the point of risking 'SPORTSMANS' lives when there are already far too many deaths of normal people and soldiers through terrorism and idealistic extremism.

Before anyone, gets on the band wagon and starts stating they could be just as much at risk as in England or Australia, the security experts will eliminate all controllable risks, so the more uncontrollable factors involved with security planning, highten the risk and therefore deem the activity dangerous.

Re: Safe for Australia to tour Pakistan?

It is learnt that Javed Miandad is not happy about India refusing to tour Pakistan. He said that Indians have never helped Pakistani Cricket. I can't understand what he expects. India have been in Australia for a long time and they surely deserve a rest after the series is over.

Re: Safe for Australia to tour Pakistan?

Javed Miandad is a grumpy old man. He has a problem with everything. Everytime PCB does something he has something to say against it. This time its BCCI. Why should we risk our players? If Australia's tour is cancelled due to security reasons how is it safe for India to tour but not for Australia?

This is my point, it is not safe for any cricketer to risk their lives for the sake of cricket. Zimbabwe is not safe, Pakistan is not safe, neutral venues/countries will have to be adopted if these countries and any others can not provide safe transit and facilities for sportsman.

Re: Safe for Australia to tour Pakistan?

i dont know why they are taking so much time to make a decision. if its risky then whats the point of travelling. cricket is not more important than players lives. if a big sum of money wasnt involved i bet the tour would have been called off earlier

Re: Safe for Australia to tour Pakistan?

In my view, if there is even a small doubt over safety, sportsmen should not be risking their lives for sport - any sport. The tour could be conducted in neutral venues, but calling off completely would be a dangerous precedent yes, but not a tangibly, physically dangerous situation. Therefore, imo, it shouldn't go ahead, at least not in Pakistan itself.

Re: Safe for Australia to tour Pakistan?

I think that australia should just hurry up and go to pakistan and stop taking so many safety precautions. I mean i understand that this could mean their lives but to them cricket should be more important. That was just a joke by the way. but really, i feel that the cricket team is the last target for any terrorists.

Re: Safe for Australia to tour Pakistan?

The only thing that i dont agree with off this is how the people of pakistan will react. So much money has ben put into this. WHy should they back out now?

Re: Safe for Australia to tour Pakistan?

except australia every team tours to pakistan but no one got hurt...why will terrorists waste the time attacking cricketers...if terrrist want to attack australian cricketers then they would bomb in australia not pakistan..

Re: Safe for Australia to tour Pakistan?

Its official, the series is not going to happen at least not this year. Australia haven't canceled the tour but postponed it.
Full news report here.

Re: Safe for Australia to tour Pakistan?

Not a surprise considering that they didn't even find it safe to send a representative to Pakistan. Plus with the recent bomings in Pakistan the tour was bound to get canceled.

Re: Safe for Australia to tour Pakistan?

It'll get quietly pushed back until it never happens or at least until the ICC concedes and they play it at a neutral venue.

It may be a good thing for Pakistan anyway as they have seemingly lost a lot of players to the ICL and they must be in a time of consolidation and team rebuilding.
