Stanford 20/20 from St. Johns, Antigua

For anyone who didn't follow it last year, the Stanford 20/20 is a single elimination tournament between all the islands and nations of the Caribbean region. Last year, Guyana beat Trinidad in the final.

Guyana will be favored again this year, as they will feature the likes of Chanderpaul and Sarwan. Bermuda got a very unlucky draw, and have to play Guyana in their first match in a few weeks.

Re: Stanford 20/20 from St. Johns, Antigua

Today's opening match is between St Lucia and Cayman Islands. Both teams won their opening matches last year, and they'll both hope to repeat that today, but one will go home unhappy.

(The opening match was supposed to be yesterday, but Cuba had to be barred from the tournament due to US economic restrictions.)

St Lucia won the toss and will bat first.

Re: Stanford 20/20 from St. Johns, Antigua

St Lucia 5-0 after the first over.

They're without Darren Sammy today, who's down in South Africa with the West Indies of course, but they're still favored to win this match. The Cayman Islands had a nice run against the other Associates in the ICC World Cricket League Division 3 tournament last year, but they're going to have a tough time playing against the professionals from St Lucia.

Re: Stanford 20/20 from St. Johns, Antigua

Three wickets fell early, but since then St Lucia have consolidated.

They're 63-3 after 10 overs. A pretty even match so far.

Re: Stanford 20/20 from St. Johns, Antigua

St Lucia 113-6 after 18 overs.

The slow bowlers have really troubled them here in the last half of the innings.

Re: Stanford 20/20 from St. Johns, Antigua

Oh no! St Lucia just hit their first 6 of the innings, but it should have been a catch. Tulloch was underneath it a few feet in front of the boundary, but it hit his hands and landed outside the rope. It was similar to a goalkeeper pushing a ball over the net in soccer.

Re: Stanford 20/20 from St. Johns, Antigua

St Lucia finish at 134-8

I think it's a pretty balanced match at the moment, and it should be an entertaining chase. However, I think many on the St Lucia team might be disappointed with their score, and they might be taking a negative attitude into the break with them.

Re: Stanford 20/20 from St. Johns, Antigua

Caymans are 46-2 after 10. A very slow scoring rate, but since they haven't lost too many wickets, they still might be able to mount a challenge here.

Re: Stanford 20/20 from St. Johns, Antigua

Caymans finished 88-8, St Lucia won by 46 runs.

St Lucia will now play Trinidad in the next round.

Re: Stanford 20/20 from St. Johns, Antigua

Today's match is between Dominica and the British Virgin Islands. Frankly, I don't think either team is as good as the teams we saw yesterday.

Dominica should be heavily favored though. They've got a few players who've played for the Windward Islands in various regional competitions.

Dominica won the toss and will bat first.

Re: Stanford 20/20 from St. Johns, Antigua

Dominica 63-2 after 10 overs. They lost a few early wickets, but they're heading towards a score that should be sufficient to beat BVI.

Re: Stanford 20/20 from St. Johns, Antigua

After a rain delay, Dominica finally finishes at 139-7.

It's still a little moist out there, but that number is probably out of BVI's range regardless.

Re: Stanford 20/20 from St. Johns, Antigua

BVI all out for 73, they never challenged.

Re: Stanford 20/20 from St. Johns, Antigua

Third match of the tournament is about to begin (offcially Match #4). Montserrat versus Turks & Caicos, this probably won't be a good match. For anyone who doesn't follow Americas cricket, T&C is quite a few steps below the Cayman Islands. The only good news for them is that they're playing one of the tiniest countries in the world, Montserrat. The bad news is that they're probably going to lose to one of the tiniest countries in the world.

T&C won the toss and will bat first.

Re: Stanford 20/20 from St. Johns, Antigua

T&C 38-4 after 10 overs.

There's some nice bowling from a couple of the Montserrat guys here, but it's tough to judge how good it really is due to the opposition.

Re: Stanford 20/20 from St. Johns, Antigua

T&C finish with 67-9

This shouldn't be a terribly challenging score for Montserrat to match.
We'll see how long it takes them.

Re: Stanford 20/20 from St. Johns, Antigua

Piece of cake! Montserrat reached 70-1 after 7.3 overs.

T&C is probably the weakest team in the competition, but I hope they still get invited back next year. It can only help them.

The entertaining highlight of the night was an interview in the stands with a fast bowler from the US Virgin Islands. He had the most serious and intense look on his face, and he just stood there and talked for 5 minutes about how tomorrow's match wasn't even going to be close, and USVI was going to blow St Kitts out of the water. He predicted a hat trick for himself in the first over and said he felt very sorry for the St Kitts players who would have to face him. The best part was the serious look on his face (with just a tiny hint of a laugh just trying to burst through).

Re: Stanford 20/20 from St. Johns, Antigua

Today's match will be USVi vs St Kitts, the last match of what basically works out to be the first round. After this match, there will be 16 teams left.

They just had another interview with the fast bowler from the USVI, Dane Weston. What a great personality!

St Kitts won the toss, and they're batting, so we'll get to see Weston bowl right away.

Re: Stanford 20/20 from St. Johns, Antigua

St Kitts 6-2 after 3 overs.

Weston has looked very good, and the other opening bowler, Anthony, looked good in his over too. USVI with the early advantage.

After every dot ball, Weston does something to celebrate.

Re: Stanford 20/20 from St. Johns, Antigua

St Kitts 50-4 after 10, they've really been able to start scoring now that the two opening bowlers have gone. One of the new bowlers, Cornelius, has been particularly expensive, giving up 25 runs in just 2 overs.
