Steve Bucknor dropped for third Test

Umpire Steve Bucknor has been dropped for next week's third Test between Australia and India following a row that threatens the series.

Bucknor was at the heart of a series of controversial decisions in last week's second Test, which India lost.

Full article here.

Good thing or bad? Should the ICC cave in to pressure from the BCCI or should they have stood their ground?

Re: Steve Bucknor dropped for third Test

I think better Sense has prevailed on ICC's part and they have also understood that Bucknor and Benson had a bad day given their very high standards(mentioned in the Article).
So they played safe and replaced bucknor with Bowden.
Billy Bowden's presence will be good as he tends to entertain the crowd with his acts.So we can expect better umpiring standards. The other umpire's name is not known to me maybe Asad Rauf.
Also with chief referee Ranjan Madugalle appointed to act as a mediator in the row between Australia captain Ricky Ponting and Indian skipper Anil Kumble will be good for both the teams and importantly for Cricket.
I am sure Mike Procter will feel disappointed but the way he conducted the enquiry and hearing. He surely should feel down.
One thing has to be observed the reaction from Australian Board officials.

Re: Steve Bucknor dropped for third Test

Yes asad rauf will be umpire in the nxt game.
Its good decision. No question about it. There mistakes in every game but bucknor made so many in one match.

Re: Steve Bucknor dropped for third Test

Its a big disapointment in my opinion. Its a typical case of the icc shunting all the blame onto one person to try and make it look like things are sorted when they are far from it. The guy hasnt umpired 120 tests for no reason and for him i feel sorry. All those tests then a few mistakes and then all before is forgotten.

Re: Steve Bucknor dropped for third Test

The ICC have caved in my opinion, but they had little choice after the shocker he had and the rash action that the BCCI threatened.

Re: Steve Bucknor dropped for third Test

The more I think about it, the more I think it's a bad move. It sends out the message that certain boards are more powerful than the games governing body.

What happens when a country gets an umpire to stand that they dislike, will they now automatically threaten to boycott the game until they get one who is they feel is on 'their side'?

I understand the position that the ICC was put in but surely it's time to protect the sport rather than the money being made. If the games loses it's integrity then the money will dry up even quicker than because of a few cancelled games.

Re: Steve Bucknor dropped for third Test

Asad Rauf is even worse. Hes made so absolute shockers. for example, when New Zaland was playing England, i think it was, on of the kiwi players hit the ball out of the middle of his bat into his pad, the english appealed and he was given out, and he did the same thing, again to new zealand, but they never considered boycotting the rest of the series

And you have to remember, he did also make some good decisions in that test, so he hasnt completely lost the ploy as an umpire

Re: Steve Bucknor dropped for third Test

We can hope that the test series continues and the appointed umpires are also pretty aware about the situtation. So they will not take any chances.
I was surprised to see the turnaround by the ICC.
First Malcolm Speed said that Bucknor will be retained for the remaining tests.
Now he has replaced Bucknor with Billy Bowden.

Re: Steve Bucknor dropped for third Test

This move sets a dangerous precedent.
The ICC has hesitated too long on the issue of television replays. Now its decision making time.

Re: Steve Bucknor dropped for third Test

I was thinking of a challenge system similar to that which exists in professional tennis. That way the umpires still remain in control of the game and make the decisions but the players can challenge on a limited basis.

Re: Steve Bucknor dropped for third Test

Yeah but that was trialled in County Cricket and after a few games players didn't bother with it anymore

That said i don't think there is a way where everyone will be happy, technology or none

And remember that it is hard being a batsmen, what with all thing tools with which a bowler can dismiss you with. I don't think a single century has been made without the batsmen getting the benefit-of-the-doubt on some line ball decision, that technology has said they were out

Re: Steve Bucknor dropped for third Test

Many people have taken this opportunity to criticize ICC for bowing down to pressure from BCCI, setting a dangerous precedent etc etc. I think ICC should have taken this decision even before BCCI complained. The quality of umpiring was quite sub standard. The common excuse is Every human makes mistakes, stop whining and get on with the game. But Bucknor made glaring mistakes on multiple occasions which had a big impact on the result of the game. It can be argued, India would have easily drawn the Test had Bucknor not made those dubious decisions.
Apart from that, after what happened at Sydney, would Steve Bucknor be able to umpire in the Perth Test knowing that his each decision will be replayed thousands of times and people will scrutinize it as closely as possible? It could even cause him to give decisions in favour of India just to avoid controversy.
India are always accused of over reacting, but Cricket has a huge fan following in India so its bound to happen.
