Sugar

Liz (or anyone)

How much of a difference does it make to cut down on sugar in tea and coffee?
And is there a limit to how much fruit is good for you, because most contain so much sugar don't they?

Re: Sugar

I'm not sure of the actual amounts but I do remember the a doctor (specialised in diabetes) relating the story of a guy who used to eat a large number of satsumas and oranges.

He thought he was doing the right thing, avoiding sweets and eating fruit but he ended up developing diabetes due to the high sugar amounts in those fruits.

Though not meant to put people off fruit, it is a good reminder that most things need to be taken in moderation.

As for the tea\coffee, I guess it's going to depend on how much you take.

Re: Sugar

It also depends on the 'difference' of what ;)

Not sure you're ready for this but take a look at...

There is little nutritional value in processed sugar and you are better off without it. However, if you only have one teaspoon per cup, one cup per day, you do not have anything to worry about. If you are a three per cup/6 cups per day sort of person, you do not need me to do the maths for you :D

Sugar found in fruit is natural and if there are no medical reasons why you should not eat fruit, you should be eating at least 5 portions a day but this should be a variety. Fruit contain far more pluses than minuses. Eating fruit [and vegetables] will lower risks of getting illnesses, such as heart disease and some cancers.

Oh, and it does not matter whether they're fresh, tinned, frozen, cooked, juiced or dried.

Re: Sugar

I used to have a pint mug and drink 5 or 6 pints of tea a day in my early 20's. Every cup of tea had 5 teaspoons of sugar in it and nealy every cup was accompanied by a Mars Bar! My wake up call came when I had to go to the dentist for the first time of my life aged 23 and every one of molars (8 of them) needed to be filled. I was mortified, within a matter of weeks I'd cut down to no sugar in my tea and trying to avoid it at all costs.

Still can't kick chocolate but I've massively reduced my intake.

Re: Sugar

Snap!!!

I've just come back from the dentist - just like you I avoided going for years (until 23 funny enough); If it doesn't hurt there's nothing wrong, right?

Then I chipped a tooth and had to go - 8 fillings later ... :embarrassed:

I've cut down on the crap too, and I've started being more careful with brushing and flossing n stuff.

Re: Sugar

Fruit gets a bad rap sometimes for sugar content. It's OK to have a couple of pieces a day as part of your 5 a day.

Don't forget the veg though. I would say 5 portions of veg alone is more important than fruit.
