Tendon

Hi, a coach said i've damaged a tendon in my arm ( near wrist, lower forearm) coz i fell over backward nd tried to catch my self wiv my palms on floor fingers pointing towards my head whilst on me back in one of them gym halls wiv horrible hard floors. There is a weird line (like a lump but very thin from the wrist which is 1.2cm and the elbow is 7mm) u can see and when i twsit it it sticks out unusually and you can see it all the way to my elbow. And its not always hurting but i:
1) can't support weight
2) can't push open doors or pull open doors
3) hurts when i twist it
4)can't bat as its the sudden jerk hurts the most.
i was wondering how long i should rest it, how long before it stops hurting and is it anything to worry about.

Thanks phil

Re: Tendon

Phil, is this on the 'under' forearm [palm side]?

If so:
Can you curl your fingers without pain?
Can you pick up a cup without pain?
Can you bend your wrist, palm towards your arm, without pain?

If it is on the back of your forearm, can you bend your wrist the other way without pain?

What about abduction/adduction, bending your hand from side to side?

Re: Tendon

its the opposite to the palm side...i can do the gay wrist but i can't keep the arm straight and bend the wrist (so palm is 90 degrees to arm)that really hurts. and no i can't comfortably move the wrist from side to sifde

Re: Tendon

It sounds like the fascia of the extensor muscles. If so, it really needs total rest; no movement unless absolutely necessary. Drinking plenty of water will help with recovery too.

To be perfectly honest with you Phil, you should go and get this checked out; there is always the possibility of a fracture. I have known guys to battle on for up to 18 months with a fracture and then total repair is almost impossible and needing a graft from the hip! It is not a high possibility but I am not sure it is worth risking it.

Re: Tendon

Without being able to see it Phil, its hard to say.

I would like to immobilise it with a dressing/brace but if it is fractured, this could cause serious, long term issues.

Rest it until you can contract the extensor muscles [bend the wrist towards the back of the hand] without pain. If you cannot, easily, push open a door it needs more rest ;)

Stretch the arm, adding slow, full motions to the stretches and rotate your forearm. This should not cause pain! Then, rest your arms completely in your lap for at least 30 seconds before resuming any activity. This allows the muscle tissue time to recover from the stretch.

I do have to repeat though, this sounds like quite a bad injury; please consider getting it x-rayed and/or scanned.
