The Lounge 2

I never thought of that Thomas, I presumed an electric car can be charged at home with a charger 🤦
No way. It needs to be a so called "wall box" that has to be installed by a certified electrician because it has an impact on the existing electric grid in the house so that that grid needs to be adjusted, too. Any changes must be reported and agreed to by your electricity supplier. Not that easy and quite a bit of paper work necessary.

What about you, mate? Going electric?
I dont drive anymore. Wife drives our car.. She has no plans to go electric as cost still prohibitive here.

Plans here to have a home charge box run juiced from renewable energy.
I just heard on the news that Britain is joining forces with Australia to share information and data.
You talking of this new US, UK, Australia alliance Jess. Very interesting. Aussie will have nuke powered subs. Even quantum physics co operation. Unless mistaken quantum technology is associated with the study of time travel. WOW!

Here, too, although each car is subsidised by the government to the tune of up to 6,000 Euros.

Here, too, at least that's the ideal. For that you'd need solar collectors on each roof as our Greens are suggesting.

Are you saying we could all become time travellers?? 😄
I didn't know the US had joined in too, the more the merrier I guess 🤗

My friend has solar panels on her roof. How do they work Thomas?

I think Australia has the largest use of rooftop solar panels (per capita) either in the world or Southern Hemisphere. Some of my neibors have them. We cant afford them at moment as like EVs they are cost prohibitive.. but coming down.

Wow. Imagine that. Time travel has always fascinated me.

They use the sun to produce either thermal energy (solar panels) that can be used to supply warm water or they generate electricity that is fed into the local or nation-wide power grid (photovoltaic [PV] systems).
Over here anyone wanting to build a house has had to install solar panels on the roof for years. They are also becoming quite popular on balconies and on garage and garden shed roofs. Quite a bit of paper work is inevitable, though, even more so if you want to install a PV system because it impacts on the grid. PVs can be a cash cow and are optional.

A smart and necessary move considering the Chinese threat. France is devastated.

Sounds complicated but effective 🤗
Our energy prices are going up as from 1st October ☹️ maybe I should invest in solar panels. Do they work even in the winter when there's no sun?

Jessica you need to have summer sun too and you Poms dont get a lot of that either :p . Yes they do work with no sun as they store the energy when sun does not shine. Correct Thomas?

I certainly takes a bit of calculating and money and it makes the most sense if you know that you can use it for years. Specialists would have the data for central Britain, I guess. Over here a solar panel still generates 30% of the overall output in winter depending on how snowy it is. Output can be increased if it's connected to a energy storage device which is about 1,500€ and if dishwasher and washing machine run during the day.

No doubt Thomas you have heard about the Australian govt giving the French sub deal the royal flick. And for very good reason. The Froggies may call this a "stab in the back by an ally " but it was their fault the deal was scrapped. Are any of us aware that not one rivet has been placed in one sub hull despite the deal being struck over 5 years ago. Not one rivet. In addition, Australian involvement in the construction had been whittled away by the Froggies from 90% down to 50. That means the loss of many promised Australian jobs. The biggest speed bump to the deal tho has been the original cost almost doubling with the delivery date for the first sub now not until 2030 at the earliest with the remainder not until 2050/60. Our govt saw this as a joke , were not prepared to wait that long so when the new three way alliance sub deal was announced Sco Mo had the chance he needed to pull the plug on the French deal.

That's understandable. Added to this, nuke subs seem to be more appropriate considering the Chinese military build-up.

Jessica, I came across reports saying that supermarket shelves at some places in the UK are not being stocked like normal due to a lack of (European) truck drivers as a result of the Brexit.
What's the situation like in Lancs.?

Just a question to the two of you. I've heard on the news and then dug for some articles and videos cheering the return of the imperial measurement system to the UK including the crown stamp. Since Johnson calls it the "metrical martyrdom" and Frost referred to the "regulatory meat grinder" I was just wondering what you think of it? Are you enjoying the "ancient freedoms" again that you had been deprived of for so long as Johnson put it?
How did you cope with the metrical system considering that it was never consistent since distances were always given in miles, beer came in pint glasses. What do younger folks think of it?
Richie, what about your country? What system have you been using and how comfortable are you with it? Are there any similar changes in the pipeline?

Well UK that is a retrograde step in my humble opinion. Like the US it is still living in the dark ages with this archaic system.

Thomas Australia first changed to metric in 1970 some four years after we dumped the Pound for the Dollar.

Did you read the bluster coming out of China by the Commie mouthpiece The Global Times. It says Australia has made itself "a nuclear threat" with the AUKUS alliance nuke subs project. And that "we have broken" the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty. What a bunch of hypocrites. It is common knowledge that China has nuke powered subs plus they are almost certainly nuke armed. This is simply knit picking at Australia as we become less and less tolerant to Beijing's bullying.

Interesting. I didn't know that.

I guess we will further p*** off Beijing when the QUAD members meet in the US on Friday. Nothing like having strong allies in times of tension.

Australia and India about to sign a major trade deal that will hopefully remove some of the pressure from our miners and farmers that Beijing's coersion and bullying has created.

As I write this I am listening to Rainbow Lorikeets fossicking for food in a nearby flowering tree.
