Trescothick ends England career

"I have tried on numerous occasions to make it back to the international stage and it has proved a lot more difficult than I expected," he told the Somerset website. "I want to extend my playing career for as long as possible and I no longer want to put myself through the questions and demands that go with trying to return to the England team."

Rest of the article at Cricinfo.

Very sad for Tresco and for England. He was a pretty consistent performer and a vital cog of the 2005 team and often gave us the impetus needed at the top of the innings. Without him Strauss looked like half the player.

it is a shame but not unexpoected, when he missed the trip to dubai (or wherever) i think the writng was on the wall. in a way its good that he is now pubilciy addressing hisproblems as it helps raise the awareness and hopefully reduce stigma

I think he could have come back but never really tried to. I know that mental illnesses are hard to deal with at times but if you never face your demons how will you ever conquer them?

Anyway, it is a shame but everyone has to bow out at some point. He may have had another 2/3 years in him and probably a 100 plus tests. He'll still score heavily for Somerset though.

And that's one good player gone. I thought he really had a chance to make a comeback to the team, though like swhayward79 pointed out, it wasn't unexpected either. Really a shame, he couldn've played for another good three to four years, and I thought that after his 250 something score against Devon last year (in a 50 overs match) really should've earned him another call to the international side.
