Wanting To Buy A Bat

Hi guys, does anybody have a good quality bat they are looking to sell? I can't afford the retail prices and would like a bat that is well knocked in. I've had terrible luck with my bats, I have bought 2 bats from cricket shops before and both have broken just out of warranty. I don't want to buy from Ebay because you don't know what you are getting. So i'm hoping one of you guys have something you have upgraded from or retired. I don't want anything too old, up to 8 years would be good. Cheers fellas

I don't, no. I do have some thoughts however.

I have tried all sorts of things with bats, they tend to last me about 2 years on average. I have bought expensive top of the range ones, big ones, fat ones, pre-knocked in ones I've got them off the internet, from specialist shops, direct from the manufacturer. I've oiled them, not oiled them, knocked them in for months, covered them in tape, everything. Nothing stopped the damn things breaking.

I've decided now to simply go to sports direct and buy one I like the feel of with a protective cover for about £80 when they have a sale on, and if it lasts more than one season, that's a bonus. I also invest in a £20 bat and use it for winter nets and indoor cricket rather than risk my "good bat".

You can get a perfectly good bat for £20 nowadays if you find the right sale, and the one I bought for £80 is better than all the £200 bats I've owned put together frankly.

The modern bats seem to be weak compared with the older ones. I had an old grey nicolls scoop bat 15 odd years ago that was a sturdy as an old oak (or willow in this case). I sold it years ago and bet it is still going strong. I wish I kept it now:( SLA - you seem to have had the same bad luck as me with bats, or is it just the bats in general?

I think every now and then you get a bat that lasts for ages, but in general the average lifespan is a handful of seasons at most.

I've come to the conclusion that buying expensive bats is a mugs game, they don't last any longer and if they're 10% better for twice the cost, no amateur cricketer is really going to tell the difference.

I'm quite fussy, I like a light-medium bat but with thick edges and a low middle. I see so many batsmen smaller than me (I'm 6'2) wielding these huge 3lb bats and they can't really control them.

I agree, which is a lot of the reason I am looking for a good seconhand one. I also think they "play" better when they have played a few seasons, seasoned and matured. So if you have one that has lasted anymore than two years of solid cricket, I say you got yourself a great bat!
