Wii Fit - Revolutionary or a Waste?

Its due out sometime next year in England, what are peoples views on it? It could be considered an alternative to going to they gym but i can see it going in the back of the cupboard for a lot of people. This could Define the Wii if it works but it could cause the demise if its rubbish.

Re: Wii Fit - Revolutionary or a Waste?

Nintendo has announced a new fitness game WiiFit which is a full on exercise product set to give you more of a workout than Wii Sports, while still retaining all the fun of gaming. WiiFit will help to keep you physically fit via a dedicated peripheral, a wireless balance board which comes with the game. There are over 40 different activities, including hula hooping, ski jumping and heading soccer balls.

The hula hooping consists of, as you'd expect, gyrating your hips with a virtual hoop onscreen and then as the game progresses, characters will throw more hoops for you to catch and rotate as many times as you can until the time runs out.

The skiing game gives you two chances to make the longest jump you can whilst keeping your balance when landing. Players can increase speed by leaning forward, the more you lean the faster you'll go, and upon reaching the jump, you stand up straight ensuring your weight is evenly balanced for a good landing.

For the football game, you will need to balance on the board moving from side to side whilst balls are fired at you to hit back on to the field and avoiding other objects that are thrown at you at the same time.

Training falls into 4 categories: Aerobics, muscle conditioning, yoga and balance games. Players can assign their height to a profile to measure body mass index and Wii fitness age as well as monitor progress and record performance statistics.

The calorie busting fun could appeal to couch potato kids as well a non gamers, perhaps using the Nintendo Wii as a slimming tool which would be a move into the lifestyle category rather than gaming, covering the market from another angle.

Nintendo has not given a release date yet for WiiFit, although its thought to hit the highstreet in early 2008.

Re: Wii Fit - Revolutionary or a Waste?

I think it will be a good tool and I for one will be buying it when it comes out.

Re: Wii Fit - Revolutionary or a Waste?

Do you not fear that you'll use it at the start then quickly forget about it and just do the activitys and leave the board. However it would be great as a family challenge. See who can get the Best improvement in BMI over a set space in time.

Re: Wii Fit - Revolutionary or a Waste?

It's a good idea and sure to continue the family appeal of the wii. Will we check it in the back of the cupboard after a few weeks? Maybe, but then its up to Nintendo to make it as fun as possible and make sure we keep on using it.

Re: Wii Fit - Revolutionary or a Waste?

Cheers, Will!

Looks pretty sweet but I'd want to see the games and software first. It would help with the development of a cricket game though, as it could sense front or back foot shots!

Re: Wii Fit - Revolutionary or a Waste?

Amen! And bowling you could use the control and board together remote for action and foot for power timing. Same with batting, footwork using the board and remote for the bat. Also Fielding would be cool with it. Its not a bad idea at all actually ::)

Re: Wii Fit - Revolutionary or a Waste?

The Wii is just begging for a decent cricket game. Look how much fun the baseball one was on WiiSports, and we all know Baseball is cricket's simple cousin! ;)

Re: Wii Fit - Revolutionary or a Waste?

This is actually a nice idea, and taking into account that the consoles name itself says its for all, (Wii, meaning "we"). The console wasn't meant to be the next gen fastest gaming platform or the most realistic. It was just meant for fun and this thing amplifies that effect. :)

Re: Wii Fit - Revolutionary or a Waste?

I think any health benefits are going to be negligible, but if it gets kids interested in the sports it's simulating, it will have done a good thing. I suppose one thing is that however slight the health benefits, they will be far greater than those got from sitting on the sofa gawking at the tv.

Re: Wii Fit - Revolutionary or a Waste?

I think it will help balance and some core work just by its very nature and as has been mentioned if it gets kids being more interactive it has to be a good thing ... especially if it is making things like yoga more main stream!

Re: Wii Fit - Revolutionary or a Waste?

I think it's a great gimmick and others have said, its better than having the kids sat around being static.

Re: Wii Fit - Revolutionary or a Waste?

I read some research a while back that showed Wii Sports burned only a smaller amount more calories than just playing normal console games. I would have thought this sould be similar.

If people use it as a gateway to being more active generally then great, but I suspect some will assume that's ALL they need.

Re: Wii Fit - Revolutionary or a Waste?

Yep, that's what everyone will think. And I am sure that not many would continue to use this after a month or so, unless Nintendo comes up with some crazy online play or excersise ideas.
