Will we see 200 in One day internationals?

See that another player has scored 150+ in a Twenty20 game got me thinking about the 50 over game and that we still haven't seen an international 200 or more.

The highest score is currently 194 by Saeed Anwar for Pakistan against India in Chennai but this was set back in 1996/7 and the record before that was Viv Richards in 1984.

You would have thought that with the current trend of scoring quickly, someone would have cracked it by now, but who?

McCullum is a big hitter and appears to be able to hang around for decent amounts of time, Pietersen is capable of scoring at the pace needed. Gambhir and Butt are two more names which come to mind, as does Sehweg (although I don't think he is a natural one day player). Then we have the likes of Hayden, Marsh and Ponting or even a Gayle. Elsewhere, Ashraful is another quick scorer but lacks the consistency and concentration I feel.

So, the question to you is, will we see 200, when and who is the most likely to reach the mark first?

I think it will happen within say 5 years. Probably be someone like Gayle or Sehwag, most likely to be an opener.

I suppose KP at 3 has a chance but I'd guess Sehwag considering he's had experience of big scores in other forms of the game (eg two test match triples) and he opens.

I agree with Wolf on the timescale, after that we might not see too much 50 over stuff at all.

I don't think that would ever happen. Flintoff once hit 240 in a junior game but there would have been an obvious gulf in class there which you are never going to get at pro level, Even if you open and bat through, if you get your fair share of the strike you are only going to get 60 balls, it would take some incredibly consistent hitting to achieve 200.

I tend to think along the same lines and believe that around the 160 mark will be about it.

Re: Will we see 200 in One day internationals?

it would certainley take some incredible hitting and luck to break 200! but with teh invention of free hits its certainly possible!

Re: Will we see 200 in One day internationals?

Yeah, I think 200 in a 20twenty match really is a bridge too far. I think McCullum's record could stand for a while tbh.

Re: Will we see 200 in One day internationals?

i'd guess we'll see it in the next couple of years, either one of india's top few or maybe australia most likely

mccullums record i'm not too sure about, it was nearly broken the other day by napier for essex who only ended up 6 short and what a knock that was

Re: Will we see 200 in One day internationals?

i remember watching jayasuriya's innings of 189 and i think he had a pretty good chance but he wasnt playing for the record and got stumped off a clever wide ball. by the time a batsman gets to 150-160 its 45th over so they try to hit a six of every ball and get out in the process hence we havent seen a score over 200 yet.
its definately going to happen one day i know that for sure.
