world cup letdown
Well well, what a disappointing end to a completely underwhelming and anticlimactic major sports event.
Quite simply it dragged on for too long and by the super eights i had lost interest in seeing second rate matches to be honest with absolutely no atmosphere at the grounds with which we associate with West Indies cricket.
I dont need to emphasise the complete lack of planning that went into this tournament, it takes more than just half decent infrastructure to make a success of a major event like this. Never let these people loose on a tournament like this again.
Englands woeful performance didnt help with my lack of enthusiasm one bit as they struggled in every game they played. Bermuda, Canada,Ireland and Bangladesh all made England look distinctly average.(we are actually worse in my opinion) We were thrashed by South Africa and New Zealand and almost looked half decent against the Aussies for half a game!! We ran Sri Lanka close and beat the woeful hosts!!! Not good enough at all, Fletcher has gone, now time for Vaughan to do the right thing and step down as one day captain and make himself unavailable for the one day game, hes not a one day player and never will be. Strauss should be captain and the rest need to seriously look at their priorities rather than being the big time Charlie! Andrew Flintoff is a colossus for us when hes on fire but hes now a better bowler than a batsman and he is fast becoming just a bowler as opposed to the great all-rounder he was. He needs to stop writing autobiographies(3 at the last count, aged just 29!!!!) and start doing some batting again, i cant remember the last decent innings he played, in either form of the game!
I feel completely let down by the whole experience and im glad im not one of the thousands who wasted my money out there watching the games.
I fully understand ICC's theory that there is cricket outside the top eight but did Scotland, Holland, Canada or Bermuda really add to the spectacle that a world cup is all about? Did Zimbabwe or Kenya? Do people really want to see Bermuda vs Canada at a time when the showcase of cricket is being shown around the world? They are quite obviously not up to it and i for one feel that only the best teams in the world should be allowed to compete. Theres no place for such teams ive mentioned above until they have the setups that allow them to compete with even the lower ranked sides. Im not a subscriber to the belief that to improve they have to be smashed by Australia or South Africa, that wont help them one iota.
I really have fell out of love with the game and its down to complete saturation of mediocre, sub-standard cricket over a period of quite a few months going back to Englands inept winter.
Cricket will need something quite spectacular to bounce back after such a critical bashing it has received, i think the best thing they could have done is abandon it after the death of Bob Woolmer and at least retain some form of dignity rather than allow meaningless games to continue in front of a couple of thousand fans! Shame on the ICC and all those involved. Heres to club cricket where the players actually care.
Well done Australia btw, they are so far ahead of everyone that they make the decent sides look like part timers.
Oh and my final gripe is Sky Sports coverage of the whole debacle, they had more presenters there than some games had spectators, what a farce ,and muppets like me are helping contibute to their wages whilst they are on some 7 week jolly.
They once were innovators when it came to cricket coverage but now cos they have no real rival they seem to have grown complacent and stale, and frankly boring.
Im not bitter or jealous in the slightest!!! Whens the darts on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
