thanks

Re: how to bat for spin bowling

I like to think of myself as a good player of spin and I usually try to get on the back foot and watch the ball all the way onto the bat. If I have to get on the front foot, I, again, watch it carefully and get on top of it, I don't allow it to spin. I might be wrong though.

Na well said Mousey. Redondo don't be afraid to use your feet, even if you get to the pitch of the pitch and just kill it. It's still well played, when using your feet you don't have to slog every ball.

As you will here most people say, Get either right back or right forward, none of this in between stuff. If you get right forward you can smother the ball and work with the spin. If you stick back, your ready to smash the short one and can play for the spin.

well said both. just remember also dont go have hearted goes that will be another one of the problem. if you go back to pull and cut give to everything. if you go forward and use ur feet hit through the ball.

Agreed Friezy. I can't even begin to think how many times this year I have given just over half into my cut shot. To find point a little deeper or closer than I expected and hit it to him (he usually catches it:p).

Also mate, don't let spinners tie you down, rotate the strike, different batsmen mess up a spinners rhythm.

the field is usually spread out when a spinner is on what i like to do is just use my feet and u could pretty much get a single off every ball if u place it good

Re: how to bat for spin bowling

I'm a really poor player of leg spin myself, but I've been told by the club veteran leggie to wait for the ball and don't lunge at it.

Re: how to bat for spin bowling

i think the key to playing good wrist spin is backing your eye. you back your eye u could get on top of a wrist spinner any day of the week

Re: how to bat for spin bowling

Safe to say that footwork and soft hands are key. You need to be able to get to the pitch of the ball, as well as play with or even against the spin.

Soft hands help in keeping the ball down and give you more options than just smashing the ball out of the ground.

Re: how to bat for spin bowling

basically i have a similer problem to this i played against spinners and slow dibbly dobblers today and i was dreadful, yet against faster stuff i was fine.

i try and get down the pitch of the ball but i never get there and always miss it.

i try and take a huge leap forward with the front foot but again i don't get to the pitch and the ball hits the splice or glove.

when i get on the back foot i kind of jab at the ball, and as a result i keep the ball out but i never feel as if i could score any runs, i don't hit it very cleanly, i got out alot and i didn't look very good

should i just get on the back foot everytime unless its really full, i keep hitting the ball early as well which is really frustrating, ball goes in the air alot.

Play each ball on it's own merits. If you start thinking that you must do this, or must do that, then you'll only cause yourself problems.

Ask yourself, what is the actual problem? Is it the length, the flight, the spin? Is it your batting technique - you say you never get to the pitch, so what is going on there?

Try to isolate the issues, then work on them one by one. First up for me would be to sort out the not getting to the pitch of the ball, it's either poor footwork, head being off balance or most likely a combination of both.

Re: how to bat for spin bowling

Well, I'm a legspin bowler, so I'm a pretty good player of spin, so I would suggest that you carefully watch the ball out of the bowlers hand, and play off the back foot. If you want to play off the front foot, make sure you get your foot as close to the ball as possible.

Re: how to bat for spin bowling

Oh, and If they give you a ball thats in one of your strong points, have a safe go at it, don't be stupid, but if you hit a good boundary (not just randomly slogging) it really puts the bowler down, making his bowling generally worse, allowing you to score more runs.

Also try and get someone who bowls spin to have a couple of sesh's in the nets with you.

Re: how to bat for spin bowling

When you double step. Make sure you dont step to the ball directly but rather move your front foot towards the offside regardless of where the ball pitches...

Re: how to bat for spin bowling

I dont use my feet but back my eye, I can watch spinners perfectly and they dont rush me like quick bowlers will

The one thing I have started to do now is if a spinner bowls quite loopy balls that really bounce I rock back and if not in a position to smash away I just let the ball hit me, never going to cause any pain and removes the in close fielders from being effective

Re: how to bat for spin bowling

most of these methods are correct, however when facing a quality spinner coming down the pitch can be very dangerous, play every ball on its merits and if you think you can get to the ball on the full or half volley then go for it, and remember to use your crease to make a decent ball a short ball, footwork is the key to playing spin, and allways be on the lookout for runs.

Well of course you will (Have a hard time), they're spin bowlers it's a lost cause as far you're concerned especially if they're wrist spinners. It doesn't matter how good you are - you could be Don Bradman the best batsman in the world as long as you're not facing Clarrie Grimmett, but as soon as Clarrie Grimmett a wrist spinner turns up you can kiss your batting reputation goodbye.

Interesting attempt Dave. Unfortunately, it is very rare to find a wrist spinner as good as Clarrie Grimmett, so it kind of falls flat.;)

Pretty much what everyone else has said: footwork and playing each ball on its merits. In the limited batting experience that I've had(at the nets and in the backyard; I've never actually played in a team) the thing that has most got me in trouble has been charging down the wicket and failing to get to the pitch of the ball.

Re: how to bat for spin bowling

You gotta try and wind em up though!

And as you've pointed out - as long as you can vary your deliveries they're going to eventually get frustrated and then down they come and you've won!

Well I'm not exactly the biggest fan of sledging; I think that there is some place banter and winding your opponent up, but I do think it can degrade into rather ugly blight, either making it horrible for your opponents or if your opponents are not terribly bothered by insults, making you look rather stupid and silly.

My tendency to charge is more out of frustration of the other players than myself. During backyard style games at home or school; the other players tend to get a bit annoyed if you just block everything.
