Subbies Thread

Are the results of the T20's anywhere. And which guest players did best ? Brighton had last over win against Noble Park and play Kingston who I hear also won next week. As an aside quite difficult to get to Noble Park on a Tuesday night when working in the city.

Sneaky tip if you can drive somewhere close to the game with a train station catch the train in and out drive from a short distance to a game and save the headaches

Altona knocked us off by 3 runs. Maynard made a classy 50 for them and our guest player, former player and current Melbourne 2nds and 3rds player James Gillard got 59.

A number of my fellow curators and I had to laugh at the convoluted message re covers being optional currently on the subbies home page. One could be forgiven for thinking this was the first time a decision to make covers optional had ever been made. It is, of course, commonplace--- no convoluted explanation was needed.

The request by the subbies to clubs to cover their pitches as early as Tuesday night is a good idea when subsequent rain is forecast. However, curators will not wish covers to be laid over a table that is still wet from the usual early-in-the-week heavy irrigation. Provided curators know that henceforth the subbies will issue instructions to clubs in circumstances as above, they should be able to bring forward their post-match irrigation so as the table will be reasonably dry by Tuesday afternoon. We curators are always looking at weather forecasts, so will be well aware if their is a likelihood the subbies will ask for the early covering of the pitch.

Interestingly the Moorabbin pitch has not been covered as the council refused to so far out.

What's stopping the club from. Covering it? I suppose why would you want to cover it in Wednesday after knocking up 260 odd. Super saint, you boys battling a bit witty the stick this year? Missing the poms?

Have Council provided a reason for their refusal? There is no doubt extended covering of the table prevents photosynthesis thereby weakening the grass and leaving it more susceptible to pathogens. I am having a devil of a job at the moment keeping a fungus called Dollar Spot under control as it loves windless conditions and a moist leaf, these being the conditions under a cricket pitch cover. The fungus invades the cells of the plant and kills the area invaded, so it is a concern.

Struggled a bit early, have been better since the Brighton game. Are certainly missing last year's Poms, taking 800 runs away is a lot to make up!

Yeah thats massive! Brighton look to be a strong contender this year although got pasted by Ormond by the looks? Brightons bowlers look like that had been doing a fair bit of damage! Caulfeild and Plenty Valley predictably looking the goods as well, have you played either of these sides yet?

Crawley is a very good bowler and have enough around him to be good although Ormond did take them to town. PV and Caulfield are travelling weel, play Caulfield next game, so can give a bit more analysis after this.

Almost got there on a 2nd week wicket. A great game of cricket. Hard to see anything but a PV vs Caulfield Grandfinal. Seen most sides now and surprise long shots are Ormond and Ivanhoe. Both have some class batsmen. Hansen is as good as anyone in Subbies and Bird is a very good pickup.

bad luck to the rep team today who lost on the 2nd last ball - just can't get a win over the country boys but making 269 is a good effort

Great game of cricket. We were one quick bowler short. Not sure we needed a side with Pradeep at 8 a bloke with over 10 subbie hundreds to his name.

Agreed, both Caulfield and PV have class throughout there teams, PV's batting can be devastating so I think this will see them end up as premiers. You guys look like you were a bit unlucky not to end up beating Ormond which looks like an amazing effort chasing 363.

How are the South sides travelling at Xmas?
Caulfield The benchmark. Made the big decision and the oldies left. In comes Guthrie and Livera and King returns form Premier. Damiano having a brilliant season and Premiership favourite. Use the Swans model to perfection of recruiting ready made replacements.
Malvern. Real surprise. Recent big losses [Perera, Bhatt, DeSilva etc} but good ins with Alford and Streker. Real strength is the core group now in mid twenties with lots of experience. Gill now an established gun at this level. Both the above certain finalists
Brighton. Losses in Mc Donald,Manser and Pearson but Sirwardhane a great pickup and Crawley having a great season. Younger players stepping up and all 4 teams in finals contention at this stage. Over 30 ex and current Hatch players and strong juniors and Hatch. Need to win 3 to make finals for first time in 8 years
Elsternwick. 7 losses from last years finals side including complete bowling lineup. Shows as unable to defend 300 against Ivanhoe. Rely on O'Shea, O'Neill and Christiansen. Pardesai a handy leggie from minor counties and will trouble sides on drier wickets after Christmas. Lower elevens all rely on older players and need to convert strong junior program into senior players.
Ormond. Another 2012 finalist that is struggling. Hansen so important but only plays some games. Wight very good but Wild has been disappointing with bat. Not much in the bowling and lower elevens all struggling.Strong coach but difficult task to make finals.
Kingston Saints. Struggling across the board
Moorabbin. Few highlights.Pradeep best with bat and ball and always a danger in one dayers. Another club which really struggles in the lower grades as surrounded by several strong SECA clubs that drain local talent.

At this stage Caulfield and Malvern certainties for finals. Brighton needs to keep winning and should grab a spot. Others unlikely with Ormond the only chance with a strong run after Xmas.

The East West group is very interestingly poised. Werribee (42) and oakleigh (36) are the 2 stand out clubs and would be the 2 sides most likely to play off on the last weekend.
Bayswater (36), Altona (30) and Noble Park (30) look like the next best and will all be pushing to finish as high up as they can and these sides should fill the top 5 with the race for home finals being important.
The race for 6th is a ripper - Endeavour Hills grabbed 10 points last round and have jumped to 19 points and currently are in 6th. Box Hill, Roxborough Park and Croydon are all on 18 points and are very capable sides on their day.
Melton have been very unlucky and with 6 games left they probabaly need to win them all. They have the ability to do this and could still fly home into 6th spot if they get on a run.
Yaraville have loads of talent, Sunshine are improving each week, Willy have started making big scores and seem less reliant on Sheedy, Mt Waverley are much better than their results reflect
