3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

This is the final Test of the 3-Test series, which Pakistan leads 1-0. West Indies looked good in the second Test, but were unable to finish the job and get a win.

I think Gayle is due for a century. I have a good feeling about this.

Interesting that Lara will be going for his 35th and record-tieing century, and Yousuf will be going for Viv Richards all-time record of most Test runs in a calendar year (here's the list, with Yousuf currently in 2nd place). Lara is also aiming for the 12,000 Test run barrier.

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

The Test is underway.
Pakistan have won the toss and are batting first.

Slightly strange team news here. Pakistan have brought the same 11 as the previous Test, but West Indies have brought back Sarwan at the expense of Mohammed. A very strange decision, considering that this is predicted to be a spinner-friendly surface, and also a high-scoring one. And yet they've replaced their specialist spin bowler with a batsman.

Go figure. We'll see if this works out or not. I would expect to see a lot of overs bowled from Gayle and Bravo.

Pakistan 1 Mohammad Hafeez, 2 Imran Farhat, 3 Younis Khan, 4 Mohammad Yousuf, 5 Inzamam-ul-Haq (capt), 6 Abdul Razzaq, 7 Shoaib Malik, 8 Kamran Akmal (wk), 9 Shahid Nazir, 10 Umar Gul, 11 Danish Kaneria

West Indies 1 Chris Gayle, 2 Daren Ganga, 3 Brian Lara (capt), 4 Ramnaresh Sarwan, 5 Runako Morton, 6 Shivnarine Chanderpaul, 7 Dwayne Bravo, 8 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 9 Darren Powell, 10 Jerome Taylor, 11 Corey Collymore

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

Pakistan won the toss and chose to bat. Hafeez and Farhat have made a safe, steady start reaching 16/0 after 5 overs.

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

Corey Collymore!

Just as the announcers are preparing us for a match without many wickets, Collymore unleashes a great ball and bowls Hafeez for 18.

Pakistan 26-1

Of note: Chris Gayle came on after only 8 overs and has bowled an over already. How often do we see Gayle bowling in the first 10 overs?

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

Bad running from Younis and Farhat.
They ran when there was no way there was ever going to be a run there.
Younis out for 20

Pakistan 72/2

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

Pakistan 88/2 at lunch.

A relatively even first session, but Yousuf is in now. West Indies will need to do something about him, or the rest of the day won't be so even.

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

Yousuf got another century, his eighth of the year, but was then out for 102. The rest of the Pakistan team didn't produce very much, and they finished Day 1 at 257/7. Bravo and Collymore each got 2 wickets.

I'd say the advantage lies with the Windies for now, but this pitch is apparently much harder to bat on than everyone expected, so the West Indies batsmen will have their work cut out for them when they come in to bat tomorrow. Hopefully they'll be able to pick up those last three wickets fairly quickly, and limit Pakistan to something like 280 or 290.

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

Powell comes on for the second over of Day 2 and he bowls Shahid Nazir with his first delivery of the day! Great start, West Indies should be batting soon.

Pakistan 265-8

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

A few overs later, Collymore comes on and bowls Akmal with his first ball of the day. How do you like that? Both Powell and Collymore bowl a wicket with their first balls of the day.

272-9

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

Powell bowls another one, Pakistan all out for 304.

Umar Gul's previous high score was 16, but he did a great job in his brief appearance with the bat today and finished with a new personal best of 26. The ball that Powell bowled him with was really a good one, so he shouldn't feel too bad about losing to it.

The problem for Pakistan though is Danish Kaneria. He was bent over in pain soon after he came one, and then got hit in the side of his knee with a ball just a delivery or two later. Then, just minutes later, he ran two runs and then fell to the ground in pain. He finished the innings with a runner soon after.

It'll be interesting to see how much he can bowl today. It's possible that he won't be able to bowl at all, and even if he does, it might not be for long.

West Indies have their own problems though, as the pitch looks even worse than it did yesterday. 304 will not be an easy number for them to match.

Collymore finished with 3, Powell and Bravo got 2, and Taylor and Ganga wound up with 1 wicket each. It's nice to see Collymore finally get some wickets to his name, he's deserved them with a lot of good bowling in this series.

That was Ganga's first ever international wicket (in either Tests, ODI's or even Twenty20's), what a distinction for Inzi to go down in the books for!

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

West Indies 42-0 at lunch after 10 overs.

Kaneria came on and bowled one over towards the end, and looked pretty decent and got a maiden, but then looked a little pained after his final ball, and wound up limping away afterwards.

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

Gayle out for 40

West Indies 51-1

He hit a weak shot straight to Razzaq, who missed it on the first attempt, but knocked it fairly high up into the air and caught it on the way back down.

Kaneria, by the way, has bowled a few more overs after lunch, and has looked fine.

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

Lara bowled for a duck!
West Indies 51-2

Umar Gul has struck twice in the same over.

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

Oh dear, now Gul bowls Sarwan for a duck.

West Indies 51-3

What a change here. West Indies were looking good at 51-0, and not they've dropped to 51-3, losing 3 top batsmen, Gayle, Lara, and Sarwan, along the way.

Umar Gul is on fire!

Ganga, Morton, Chanderpaul, and Bravo are going to have to work to get this Test back on track for the West Indies.

Chanderpaul has come in to join Ganga in the middle. Now would be a really good time for these two to get a partnership going.

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

Chanderpaul and Ganga doing their best to help West Indies recover, hitting a number of boundaries, and keeping their partnership going.

West Indies 108-3

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

Chanderpaul gone for 36, he hits is straight to Farhat who has to make a very quick catch.

West Indies 114-4

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

West Indies 131-4 at tea, they still trail by 173 runs.

This middle session belonged to Pakistan, and Umar Gul in particular. If they can build on this in the final session, they'll be in good shape heading into Day 3 and the second innings.

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

Farhat with another good close-in catch, Morton gone for 21.
That's Kaneria's second wicket too.

West Indies 153-5.

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

They spent a long time looking at the replays of that catch to see if it hit Farhat's helmet, and it looked to me like it brushed the visor. Morton was eventually confirmed as out.

Re: 3rd Test: Pakistan v West Indies at Karachi

West Indies 165-5, still trailing by 139 runs.

Ganga on 60, Bravo on 0, Ganga has played a very slow but steady innings.
