New Zealand v Sri Lanka 1st Test

This series gets underway today, with two of the more underrated and underappreciated sides in world cricket.

New Zealand have a number of injuries that kept them from having a full squad available, and now Mason has been added to the injured list.

Meanwhile, it looks like Sri Lanka will be bringing a team that is much closer to full strength.

Sri Lanka look to better away record

By the way, for anyone wondering, this tour will feature:
2 Tests
2 Twenty20's
5 ODI's

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 1st Test

Sri Lanka chooses to bat first, but New Zealand strike early.

Bond just got Jayasuriya to give New Zealand a happy start to the Test.

Sri Lanka 11-1 after 3 overs.

Sri Lanka WU Tharanga, ST Jayasuriya, KC Sangakkara, DPMD Jayawardene, HAPW Jayawardene, LPC Silva, CK Kapugedera, MF Maharoof, WPUJC Vaas, SL Malinga, M Muralitharan

New Zealand JM How, CD Cumming, MS Sinclair, SP Fleming, NJ Astle, JDP Oram, BB McCullum, DL Vettori, JEC Franklin, SE Bond, CS Martin

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 1st Test

Ooh, Sangakkara out now too!

c Sinclair b Bond

Sri Lanka 17-2 after 4.3 overs

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 1st Test

another for Bond!

M Jayawardene c Franklin b Bond

Sri Lanka 37-3

I think Jayawardene must be having second thoughts about batting first.

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 1st Test

Kapugedera and Tharanga trying to get things back on track.

Sri Lanka 77-3 at lunch.

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 1st Test

A quick strike after lunch!
Franklin got Tharanga
Sri Lanka 87-4

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 1st Test

Chamara Silva comes to make his Test debut for Sri Lanka.

And he's BOWLED on just his second delivery faced!
Franklin get's his second.
Well, that's an unfortunate way to make a Test debut, bowled on the second ball.

Sri Lanka 87-5

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 1st Test

Kapugedera out lbw,
Franklin gets his third.

106-6

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 1st Test

Vaas out

c McCullum b Oram

Vaas isn't so sure that he made contact with the bat, and replays are somewhat inconclusive, but he's been given out, and that's what counts.

110-7

If they can keep this up, New Zealand will be batting before tea!

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 1st Test

Martin gets P Jayawardene, that's his 100th Test wicket.

Oram gets Maharoof.

Sri Lanka 132-9, still about 15 minutes before tea.

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 1st Test

Poor drop, Bond dropped Murali, should have been another wicket for Martin.

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 1st Test

Murali swinging for fun at most of the balls, finally out for 14.

Sri Lanka all out for 154.
Kapugedera and Tharanga the only decent scores, with 37 and 33 respectively.
Bond and Franklin with 3 wickets, Martin and Oram with 2.

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 1st Test

How was out early on for a duck, leaving New Zealand 3-1, but since then Sinclair and Cumming have put together a decent enough partnership.

New Zealand 70-1 after 24 overs.

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 1st Test

Sinclair out for 36,

New Zealand 73-2

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 1st Test

New Zealand 85-2 at stumps, still trail by 69 runs.

The first day has definitely belonged to New Zealand. You never want to ruls Sri Lanka out of a test though, as you never know when their batsmen may turn in one of those double century performences that they have every so often.

That said, the Kiwi bowlers dominated. Barring a batting collapse, they'll have a good lead going into the second innings.

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 1st Test

Not sure if it's the pitch, or if both these teams just have superior bowling attacks, but Sri Lanka's 154 may put them in the lead after the first innings. Just over an hour into day 2 and New Zealand are 113/6. Vaas has 3 wickets, and Murali has 2.

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 1st Test

Vettori delivered when New Zealand needed him, and scored 63 runs today, the only person to make it over 50 so far in this Test! Fleming contributed 48, and New Zealand eventually made it to 206 all out. That was good for a lead of 52 runs after the first innings. Murali took 4 wickets and Vaas took 3.

Re: New Zealand v Sri Lanka 1st Test

Sri Lanka's second innings is well underway, and Bond has struck mulitple times so far! He's already taken 3 wickets, and was involved in a run out that glanced off of his hand and onto the stumps.

Sri Lanka has crumbled to 60-5 after just 21 overs. That's a lead of 8 runs.

Poor old Chamara Silva was out for a duck for the second time this Test. What an unfortunate and low-scoring test for him to make his debut in!

There's still 16 overs to go today. With a lead of only 8 runs, there's a definite chance that Sri Lanka will be bowled out today and this test just might be over on the second day!

And even if they can make it through the rest of the day, this should still be finished by lunch tomorrow.

Who needs 5 days when you can finish it in 2?
