General Chat 2011/12

Having recently attended a meeting of big wigs from cricket victoria....I can tell you that a reduction in the number of clubs would make them happy. Clubs merging condenses resources and talent.
They want competitions to be less diluted and all of the talent to enter Premier cricket, become state players, and then play for Oz.
Clubs better sort themselves out!?

Well maybe its time premier cricket get rid of their 3rds & 4ths (most are all riff raff anyway) & stop promising kids they'll get a game(bullshit) in the 1s & 2s just to keep them at their clubs, the 3rds & 4ths at district & sub district level is a joke.....:(

agree! its hard enough to keep kids playing cricket as it is these days as soon as they find girls and alcohol the appeal of standing out in the field all day instead of being at the beach etc really wears thin!

Agreed just have 1s and 2s the better players can still train with the premier club and those that dont get games can go back and play with their home clubs like VFL footy does...

I agree with you 100%. With the amount of soccer exposed immigrants coming to this country it is only a matter of time before we lose a great many cricket grounds.

I've had the same thoughts myself for the last 15 years or more. It's about time premier cricket merged a few clubs and got back to 12. But keeping bendigo, ballarat and geelong. I've had a gut full of coaching kids and loosing them to premier and sub-district where they are used as hacks in 3rds and 4ths, when it is obvious to all except the kid and their parents that they haven't got it.

Obviously our talented kids should go on to premier clubs. Two of our 18 year olds are playing subbies 3rds. Can you believe it. Another two are in and out of a subbies one's and two's. The equivalent of a good Nth"A" side, Have become disillusioned and stopped playing saying they are tired. More likely too embarressed to come back. Another 16 year old with some talent went a year too early to premier and played 4ths. Hopefully he will start in 3rds this season.

You make a good point. However I wonder how many local clubs would release their highly paid pro"s to play premier?

Thats why it is prudent for a club to remain a member of the largest cricket association in Australia.

Agreed. You could add one more distraction to that and that is more and more local footy clubs are paying the young fellas to play footy. Around December they are told to give cricket training away and concentrate on footy with the promise of better things to come.

Does local cricket reciprocate by renumerating 17 and 18 year olds?

All points taken lads....having played VTCA, Premier and Subbies, can I give some advice.....
Don't allow your good kids to go to Subbies....it's a dead end and a dumping ground...and is in my view the main competitor for players with VTCA, but they probably say the same in reverse!
But if the old boys playing in subbies returned to their Premier clubs to help young guys coming through 3rds and 4ths, then this level would be a better development grade for talented youngsters...theres nothing better than a few wiley veterans matched up with some capable punks, but I guess we all chase this for our home club = dilemma.
Premier clubs need 4 sides - like any club they need at least 30 guys paying subs so they can afford their Coach, pro players, club rooms, council rates, curator, tracksuits, etc, etc. Most struggle to survive as it is!
I tell you what can solve it...lets get all the clubs with Pokies to start the top level competition, with a salary cap and a draft, YCCC might go alright!

good point 2blue. Although my sources tell me that the captains who voted on the balls after they were given test balls (both Kooka and Platypus) in Rd 11 last season, were actually given specifically made Platypus - not the same quality as was being used throughout the season. Apparently these were specifically made for the vote so were of a far better quality.

As long as Platypus can deliver the same quality throughout the entire season - but unlikely given they hand painted the pink balls for the Pink Weekend!!!!

Yeah we got one of the good platypus balls and it was awesome kept it's shape all game even swang around for more than 1 over!! Would be nice if that was consistent instead of balls falling apart after 10 overs

If you'd been around clubs and once were one of these 'riff raff' than you would know the importance to some players of playing sub district and district cricket even in the 3s and 4s.

Agreed most players in the 3s and 4s subbies level are not that great however it gives a lot of young 14-16 yr olds the chance to play in the arvo on turf (many clubs only have 1s and 2s on turf maybe 3s) which is great and defiantly the most important part in their development as local club 1s and 2s cricketers in years to come.

3s and 4s district level is exactly the same, opportunity for some to play on turf (although most 3s and 4s district young kids would play 1s and 2s at their local clubs) and whilst sometimes there is bullshit promises it is not all lies because unless you are an exceptional talent, no district club would walk you into their 1s or 2s so I think you will find that if you perform in the 3s and 4s you will be given opportunities.

Unfortunately people like you and dingo jones need to be able to let kids go because they all have dreams and some may take longer to realise it but they will. A fantastic strength in a cricket club is the ability to push kids forward and give them opportunities. Its going to get a kid far further in their cricket ability as well as a chance to play high levels by pushing them forward to district level even in the 3s and 4s because they can always play higher and higher. In the VTCA there is only so far you can go. You may only lose kids for 1-3 years anyway and by the time they are able to let go of playing higher and dreams they should be capable 1st X1 cricketers in the VTCA.
