General Chat 2011/12

Go to any successful local club and check out how far and high they let their juniors go only to reap the rewards in the future... It doesn't make a difference if the kids make it a district level its about having a crack and seeing how far they can go. There is no using!!! District clubs need 3s and 4s players but (most) good young players need to start off in the 3s and 4s so its a balancing act for both parties
Phew. What a bag of wind. You just don't get it. You're not a politicion are you?

Too Old, I think there are too many people on here weighed down by the chips on their shoulders and maybe you are right - they should do it on their own thread. Not the first time I've agreed with you. Maybe I should change my moniker to 'Too Old Body Broke 2' ;)

Take it easy Dingo. The game is made for batsmen. Given the benefit of the doubt etc. Curators should be leavin a bit of juice in each wicket every Sat to even it out imo. So to say "bowlers tend to lose heart and pack it in" is a bit rich. And not even test bowlers around the world swing the ball, let alone from over number 1 through to 79, get a grip....
I agree the game is made for batsmen. It's all about making runs. Given that we play on covered wickets it's even more loaded in favour of batsmen. It's just these days hardly anyone can swing the ball. In days gone by a bowler would have trouble getting a game in 1sts if he was unable to swing the ball at least in one direction.

Just to add to the debate, used to be a time when you wouldn't bother without an invite or introduction from a recognized player at that level, now the number of Premier Clubs means the doors are open. As for Subbies, unless you played Juniors for that Sub-District club, why would you? You don't get picked for Victoria from Sub-District ranks. Go up, not sideways.

he definatley doesnt get it....... ex district players ive chatted with totally agree that 3s & 4s in premier are a cost that some clubs cant afford, subs wouldnt cover ground rental, balls, umps etc............

@weapons, if you want to talk about the willy comp go to their thread d1ckhead.......

Players do not get used at Premier Clubs. Just because you are good enough to play 2s for example doesnt mean you will actually play 2s. The reality is there's another 25 guys who are of the same ability so until you produce runs or wickets you wont get there. At local level you can play a certain grade just on potential or skill because of the lack of depth. I made my Subbies senior debut when I was 15 and played about 40 games before I was 19. But when I got to premier I played my first game in the 4ths, made a few runs then next round was in the 3s and so on.
Subbies 3rds & 4ths isnt a great standard but there is a few benefits such as: Kids playing and training on turf, a direct link to playing Hatch Shield, coaching is generally good with most clubs having ex district players etc. Michael Beer for example played 4 whole seasons of subbies in the lower grades(mostly 3s and 4s) before he finally got in the 1s and played 2 seasons in the seniors. Then at 19 went to St Kilda. Not the worst path I dont think.

Thats the best response given on here.

Jason Arnberger - came from NSW so that one is wrong

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jason_Arnberger

Mark Ridgway - moved from country VIC (Warragal) and played at Collingwood from 1985 at the age of 25, players from the country are the exception to the rule as they have usually strong home careers before making there way to the bigsmoke

http://premier.cricketvictoria.com.au/files/VCA_1st_XI_CAREER_RECORDS_1889-90_to_2009-10_N-R_2.1.pdf

Dirk Nannes - he wouldnt count either as he didnt start playing cricket until later on and went to Fitzroy at 23 after his skiing career finished

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dirk_Nannes

Bryce McGain - played 1st's for Frankston Dandenong at 21 years of age so certainly wasnt there in his mid-20's
