Test XI Selection Thread

Siddle comes in as night watchman to protect Haddin? God help me. Agree with Nairbe, how does Warner keep his spot? Obviously a favourite. Is this the innings to turn Watson's career or will it give him breathing room for another 20 Test matches? Hopefully Smith & Co go on and make 500+. The trouble is England could roll the Aussies for less than 400 which would be a disaster.Looking at that pitch I reckon me & Nairbe could don on the pads and make a decent partnership. Going to be hard work to get 20 wickets.

Warner is a bit of a knob but went alright last Test and still averages 38, they need to stick with him for a while and he certainly has more potential than someone like Cowan.

Mitchell Starc has lower back fractures. The last thing you wan to hear a fast bowler diagnosed with.

The door could be opening for a Mitchell Johnson test return come summer?

i
Yes possibly, I have seen him playing on and off and think this is a opening of an opportunity for him. Personally i beleive more needs to be done about the fitness of players as there are far too many injuries fir Australia nowadays to keep a good team in play

Not sure if it's a fitness deficiency? A strength deficiency? Too much bowling? Whatever it is, the fitness staff need to address it before we lose even more fast bowlers to back injuries.

Johnson playing well in the ODI's but one feels it is the all to familiar promise that won';t appear at the vital moment.

We could do and have done a lot worse, he hasn't disgraced himself at any level. Clarke's increasing problems getting on the pitch mean we may well be looking for a captain a well as a batsman.
If we get to that point, then the candidates, seem to be Watson and Haddin, for some reason Siddle is never mentioned :confused:;).
Get Bailey in and hope.

Bailey would make a good No:5 and vic, but he is a bit late to be captain. We have some big issues with our bowlers breaking down and our batsmen clearly lacking the maturity required at the top level. If it comes to it and Clarke's back gives then we will need to take a long hard look around. I am not against the Graeme Smith move and finding a younger player with that little something and then putting him there with the backing he needs. Clearly the current group are not going to be world beaters but looking back will only hold us back.

Big call, Clarke would have to retire from test cricket to go with a young captain right now, if he will be in and out we risk the Chapell/Hughes debacle all over again.
While I don't rate Clarke as a captain at all, his greatest flaw IMO, is his man management, which Bailey has in spades. If he can provide a positive influence in the change rooms and be good enough to keep his spot in the team even better.

Say they do go down the route of a young captain who do you pick? Which youngster in the surrounds has cemented his spot in the team?

George Bailey has impressed me no end. I think he'd make an excellent Test batsmen and a good Test captain. Clarke would have to suck it up like a man like Ross Taylor did after losing the job.

If there is a massive fault in Bailey's game is that he has to one of the worst runners between wickets that I've ever seen.

That was the scenario i thought. Clarke is at big risk with his back, should he really go down then some open minded thinking would be required. I have no real idea as to who would make a captain, i am simply not involved enough in that level of cricket (shield) to know the players well enough. Bailey is obviously a possibility if it really came to it but again he would be short term due to age.

Appears George Bailey has worked his way to the head of the queue for a berth at number 6 in the first Ashes test. Earlier on I was think Nic Maddinson. But George is looking more and more the logical selection.
