Subbies Thread

Great effort by the Eagles, first time in their history having all four teams in the finals since their inception to Subbies in 1932/33*. Also credit to perennial power Plenty Valley for the same achievement, and Bayswater the rising giant!

On form, looking like the NE group could be Plenty Valley vs. Croydon in both the 1st & 2nd XI's. Let's hope the weather doesn't affect results this weekend.

*3rd & 4th XI's only since mid-90's.

Great effort by Yaraville to get 4 teams into the semi finals. Matthew Love and David Wolfe (and others I am sure) have done an amazing job to lift that club up the various ladders

Of the ''others'', nancy, are several experienced, long-serving and dedicated committee members whom I have got to know and greatly respect. Of Yarraville's 2 club -appointed curators, the one who prepares the Oval's pitch is unavailable this week and it is a pleasure for me to assist their 3rds & 4ths curator at McIvor prepare the Oval pitch for this weekend's 3rds semi. He also prepares a pitch for the ''Clubbers'' in the VTCA and, as that pitch will be used for the Senior 2nds GF, he has a lot on his plate over the next couple of weeks and needs a chop out.

In the South/West this week Oakleigh will start heavy favourites against Yarraville and the Caulfield vs Werribee match up looks to be a cracker.

Yarraville have found a way all year with Nathan Allen and Buch being their trump cards, with Lovey being a bit down on his usual self. Expect Oakleigh to get over the top of them with Spike Pinwill to be the destroyer in a low scoring affair.

Caulfield would have been rapt to see Damiano back in form last week after a sub par season by his lofty standards. Who makes more out of Dean x 2 and O'Brien vs Thorne, Baldry and Damiano. Big call but Caulfield at home.

Good luck to all Clubs with sides in finals, hopefully the weather stays out of it.

interesting that you made that comment about winning the toss Fastfarnee as the last time Oakleigh & Caulfield met a few weeks back, wickets tumbled out at Warrawee Park. The pitch was rated poor and got an extremely low rating. Oakleigh is usually pretty good so let's hope conditions are good for these two excellent teams.

Whilst I was watching the 3rds SF at the Yarraville Oval I think there may have been more discussion about the fiasco a K down Willy Rd where Senior Division GF in the VTCA could not get underway on either day at Spotty's home ground (neutral venue) owing to the covers not having been put down before the rain. When we were discussing the vacancy created by the Saints, South Caulfield was mentioned as a club that would be a suitable replacement. It has, in my view, been very poorly treated in recent seasons in respect to the location of the neutral venue leading me to wonder if it may now do a Hoppers and express interest in joining the subbies. I appreciate this would create a bye unless an existing club departed, and I don't think that is likely. Comments please.

Interesting that Croydon has picked up Hamish Patterson after his short stint at Ringwood. One of the sharper subbies quicks going around.
Who? Don't think anyone will b worried About a low grade one time district seamer
May want to check your facts before you go making a fool of yourself. The last two years Paterson played in subbies cricket he took 37 and 30 wickets in those seasons. He also won the subbies young player of the year award so I think he will be more than a 'low grade on time district seamer.' Interesting that he only gave it a one season crack at premier level, played 7 1st's games in that year as well. Will be huge for Croydon.

Just would like to revisit this for a second from old mate 'the_panther' suggesting that the 'low grade one time district seamer' in Hamish Paterson would not have an impact.

I think his 174 run and 44 wicket season might have just put him back in his box.

Congrats to Oakleigh, Caulfield, Bayswater and Mt Waverley, hope the GF goes well for the Association with no interruptions and 160 overs of good cricket with the best side winning.

I read a comment from a journo that suggested there will not be any new clubs in subbies in 16/17. I think the only prospect of a vacancy occurring would be if either Sunshine, Endeavour, or RPB opt out as a bye would not be acceptable. If a club decided to leave then I am sure that subbies would be happy to have South Caulfield. The only issue I can see is that they are horribly close to Ormond and Caulfield in terms of location but I doubt that would ultimately be a show stopper if they were interested. On things VTCA, great to see they are falling into line and now playing 2 day GF's, great initiative, as that is the format during H&A. On the CV restructure, I see a few 2nd tier comps are changing the format of their top grades, reducing numbers, surely a sign that things are going on behind the scenes in readiness for the CV model in the near future. Given we know subbies position on the model V1, I wonder what V2 will look like.

Very interested to learn the VTCA will adopt the 2 day GF -- on consecutive days and from next season I presume. As for this season, due to play at a couple of their GF venues not having been possible last weekend, 4 VTCA teams will now experience a consecutive day GF this weekend. In respect to clubs departing, Sunshine's pres told me last week (during a discussion we were having on an unrelated matter), that he had recently submitted the club's 3 year business plan to the subbies exec. I was recently told by a member of the VTCA's B of M that following the adverse response to V1, the question of a V2 had been put on hold for 5 years. That does seem an overly long time for this issue to be put on hold. Have you heard differently?

I was told version 2 may be revisited in 2020 so that ties in with what you've heard.
The people who originated the garbage will probably be long gone by then.

Sorry Westie, when I said they were adopting a 2 day GF I was referring to the Spotswood debacle, I don't think they actually want 2 day GF's. Couldn't help but laugh at the Spotswood President having a sook about the situation. On one hand he was defending their actions by saying they couldn't put covers down until the VTCA "told them to", give us a spell. And then he was whinging about all the food and bev that they couldn't sell due to the washout, waaaah. Maybe if they had used common sense in the first place they wouldn't have had to throw out all those pies! Total embarrassment for the VTCA and their "showcase" final. Certainly makes another strong point in favour of the subbies hosting rights policy, at least the host has a vested interest in the game and will ensure the preparation is done correctly.

If CV was a private enterprise organisation they would already have been given their marching orders. Far too many people in CV are ''refugees from the classroom'' --- with business acumen to match..

Seems on the surface to be a strange announcement from Werribee with Johnstone leaving, would love to know what the circumstances where. Bizarre to say the least From the outside looking in

Incredible really, Johnstone was obviously unaware on the weekend judging by Lance Jenkinsons article below

http://www.starweekly.com.au/sports/focus-shifts-to-april-meat-market-for-werribee/

Upon Johnstone's appointment Werribee were quick to announce it was a 3 year deal - something has changed in the last 72 hours.

Obviously he won't have too many troubles getting another role - RPB would take him back in a heartbeat.

On the surface it seems a bizarre decision, but I think if you peel back the layers and are privy to the inner sanctum at the club you'll see its a pretty just result. There was a lot of back and forth behind closed doors and I don't think the relationships between Mitch and the club/players were optimal.

As for other roles, he'll be back at RPB next year.

Interesting couple of lines buried away in the VTCA South announcement. Seems CV won't put names to these quotes any more after the new Premier clubs debacle, left it to Paul Amy to push their propaganda. Any VSDCA insiders know whether either comment is fact or fiction?

"There is also talk one or two Sub-District clubs will look to the new competition. But Subbies officials are adamant their clubs are “solid’’.

Leader understands that the VSDCA, which has staunchly opposed being broken up, has been told it can operate for another two seasons before falling into the regional models proposed by the turf taskforce."
