Time for a new update and thread with all things relating to SECA Cricket for the 2019 / 20 Season. Plenty of things happening in the pipeline, new 14 game structure, 8 team comps, and rumours relating to aligning under the CSB Banner.

Clocker, after you use the bolt cutters to escape, this might be of interest.

Longmuir & Woolnough Clubs: 2019 -2020
Date of Event South East Cricket Association: Fri May 31, 2019 8:32PM

Dear Clubs,
Over the past month the SECA Executive have held meetings in relation to the composition of the Longmuir Shield and Woolnough Shield teams for 2019/2020 season.

All Clubs’ submissions have been evaluated by the Executive, subsequently after much discussion we have decided the teams to compete in Longmuir & Woolnough for the upcoming “new” 8 team Grades are as follows.

Longmuir Shield Woolnough Shield

East Sandringham Washington Park
Brighton Union Carnegie South
Le Page Park Omega
West Bentleigh Kingston Heath
Bentleigh Uniting Cluden
Bentleigh ANA Moorabbin West
Mackie Chelsea Heights/Aspendale Gardens
Elwood Melbourne Hellenic

We look forward to another successful season with our 2 Premier grades.

Next week we will be releasing the new schedule for the entire SECA Seniors Competition with the restructured Eight Team Grades format.

Significant effort has gone into the restructure of our competition given 5 different game formats, different playing days and as mentioned above the new 8 teams to a grade.

Regards
SECA Seniors Fixturing and Match Committee Chairman.

Big turn out at the SECA AGM. It looks as though the alignment with CSB will take longer than first thought and still no clear definition presented to the clubs last night. Moving around and networking for recruits were high on the agenda after the initial meeting, furthermore to that was, gauging by some of the discussions around the groups is that SECA clubs may not vote for the merger.

Wash ups would not have been happy about being left out of Longy. There were whispers going around that one club in the current list was going to request a demotion, due to the lack of quality players coming through their lower grades. Certainly going to ensure that every game is important.

Wrong mail there Clocker, rules were very clear and everyone knew that 2 would go down and no promotion would happen for this season. SECA would have been drawn and quartered if they had of not been consistent considering what they did when the comp was changed from 12 to 10.

There is a Washington Park relegated and then there is a Bentleigh Uniting relegated.
Nothing of concern here Clock, again I reiterate, everyone knew that there would be two down so bad luck to Washington and The Redbacks should have gone down the season before to allow for the Hoops to come up instead of having to win the GF twice. As far as Uniting goes, they were saved by divine intervention, or shall we say, lack of fortitude by Chelsea who put up the white flag so they can re-build.

Mackie & ANA will be in a close tussle to see who avoids relegation. Inclined to stick with Mackie going down as the Royals have managed some incredible Houdini like escapes over the past decade. Elwood will also be thereabouts in the relegation battle and will want to be at their best. A bad day or two at the office could end up costing one of these teams their Longy status.

Eight teams will be thereabouts in the relegation battle if they have -Quote ''a bad day or two at the office ''. The comp itself is now structured to be extremely even right down. Are you out of the retirement village yet ?

I have managed to escape on a couple of occasions, but they have quickly found me. looking forward to daylight saving, and a little bit of sun. The Ricketts have been playing up.

Tips for Longy:

Beach Boys
Hoops
Royals
Le Page

Tips for Woolnough

CHAG
The Golfers
Washups
Westars
Not a bad first up selection from you Clock, 7 out of 8 indicates you might have some inside gossip from around the traps. Quite a few players missing from various teams so I'm hearing, and the live scoring app situation went into melt down at some grounds. Also, I was told that there was a few questions being raised over an umpire who was being trialled in one of the top grades who wasn't up to it and made a couple of crucial LBW decisions which may have had a big bearing on the result. All in all though, good start under the new format and some cracking games coming up this week as well.

Mackie CC has a long season ahead of them. If they are forced to play Leroy (no disrespect intended) then the club is in a lot of trouble. The Royals batting looks ominous. My concern is their bowling which looks a little thin. The Hoops will be up there again, whilst the Cowboys are too hit and miss. They seem to be dyslexic trying to understand the word 'partnerships'. The Beach Boys got the chocolates against ESBC, but to use racing parlances, they needed the line. Benteigh Uniting defeated Le Page with surgical precision. Got the start they wanted from their top order and just kept making runs. Quite an impressive performance.

The Wash Ups and Omega crossed swords for the first time this season, and I would not be surprised if we saw a sneak preview of the GF. The Wash Ups are the stand out team but have suffered from moments of severe anxiety over the past few seasons which has seen their batting line up dissolve. They will need to overcome this if they want to win the flag. Omega will be their main challenger and have been to the top of the mountain before. Carnegie South are in for a long season, and like Mackie, you wonder what the future holds in store for them. The Weststars will be relying on the usual suspects to get them to finals. Cluden got off to a shaky start and no doubt they will be keen to bounce back. The Golfers are an experienced team and will be thereabouts come finals. The Greek rascals, Melb Helenic will be bitterly disappointed that they dropped an important match to CHAG. Even with the Moraitis clan rejoining them from Mackie, they just fell short. No doubt they will have one eye on what is transpiring in Turkey/Syria, and it will be the centre of discussion as they enjoy their Turkish coffee after training, but they have to get their season back on track as they head to the Westars in what promises to be an entertaining match.

The one day matches continue this weekend.
Longmuir:
Uniting-v-ESBC. Uniting in good form, will have too much for ESBC.
Hoops-v-Royals will be a great match. Tipping the Hoops at home...just.
Cowboys-v-Mackie. These two traditional rivals always put on a great show. Cowboys to overcome a struggling Mackie.
Le Page-v-Elwood. Le Page to bounce back and defeat the Beach boys who do not enjoy travelling.

Woolnough:
Carnegie South-v-CHAG. CHAG to remain undefeated.
Westars-v-Spartans. The Spartans to evoke the spirit of Leonidas and defeat the Weststars.
Golfers-v-Omega. Tipping Omega to get over the golfers in a very tight affair.
Cluden-v-Wash Ups. Have to stick with the Washups. Cluden will have to improve markedly to have a chance.

Longmuir:
Uniting-v-ESBC. Uniting in good form, will have too much for ESBC. Sandy have too many out's, Units to win just.
Hoops-v-Royals will be a great match. Tipping the Hoops at home...just. Should be a ripper between two teams that will be featuring well into the season, Natives got a hold of them last season and will get them again.
Cowboys-v-Mackie. These two traditional rivals always put on a great show. Cowboys to overcome a struggling Mackie. New player for the machine could be the difference, only just.
Le Page-v-Elwood. Le Page to bounce back and defeat the Beach boys who do not enjoy travelling. Le-page have lost a couple and are not at full strength, should just get over the line.

Woolnough:
Carnegie South-v-CHAG. CHAG to remain undefeated. Redbacks for relegation, Chags to win.
Westars-v-Spartans. The Spartans to evoke the spirit of Leonidas and defeat the Weststars. Westers will be hard to beat this season, picked up a couple of quality players, bowling will be too good for the souva boys.
Golfers-v-Omega. Tipping Omega to get over the golfers in a very tight affair. Golfers only just, toss of the coin.
Cluden-v-Wash Ups. Have to stick with the Washups. Cluden will have to improve markedly to have a chance. Cluden always overate themselves and struggle under pressure, Wash-ups easy.

Longmuir

The Panthers would have been pretty confident defending 195. Having the Beach Boys 1/0 and 3/27,
the Panthers would have felt two more quick wickets and the game was theirs to be won. The Beach Boys
middle order got them over the line with four overs to spare. Impressive effort away from home chasing a
decent score.

In a repeat of Round 1, the Bentleigh Uniting top order got off to a good start, and just kept making runs. Far too strong for an
East Sandy missing a few.

After pumping up their intimidating batting line up, the Royals rewarded me by duly having a bad day at the office and meekly
surrendered to be dismissed for 105. Such a huge oval, with plenty of opportunities and work the ball and build partnerships. The Hoops made light work of the chase, like good teams tend to do.

The Vandals did enough to beat a disappointing Mackie, but they still have a lot of work ahead of them this year, if they want to ensure their survival in Longmuir. Mackie's batting is poor and rely on too few. Looking through their lower grades there are not to many options, as they only have three teams...just. Tough times down at Mackie Road.

Woolnough

The Golfers managed to sink the 15 foot birdie and steal a tied result. Omega will rue the wasted opportunitiy, but nonetheless a great match.

Similar to what occured in the battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC, it was a massacre, and unlike their namesakes, there were no
heroics by the Spartans. Westars too good and too accomplished. The Spartans have some tough matches ahead, and have to regroup.

The Washups overcame an annoying Cluden with just under 5 overs to go. Clearly they are the bench mark, but it is a long season. Cluden will be better for the run and will be competitive this year.

Carnegie South do not look capable of making a big enough score to defend. With extra's being their equal top scorer, they need try and find a couple of batsmen, otherwise relegation is guaranteed.

Selections: Longmuir

On the weekend that Sydney Racing hosts a made up sprint race, to try and compete with the Victorian Spring Racing Carnival,
the real cricket begins this week, so let's see if we can tip a few winners.

Bentleigh Uniting face the relegation favourites Mackie. If Uniting bat first they will make over 300 runs. Just too accomplished for the Bowling club which hangs on by a thread. Uniting by a mile.

The Hoops come up against the Beach Boys on the gigantic Hurlingham reserve. Every win the BB get away from home is a bonus, as they will be hard to beat at the beach. Win this and everyone will sit up and take notice, plus that is another away game that they would have secured. Can't see it happening. The Hoops to win.

The Panthers come up against the Royals at LePage. Both teams coming off defeats, with the Panthers ruing dropping their match against the Beach Boys. The Royals capitulated against the Hoops, and their much vaunted batting line up failed to fire a shot. Perhaps I over estimated their ability based on an emphatic win against a sub standard opponent. The Panthers to bounce back.

The Vandals and East Sandy have had a number of interesting contests over the years. Everytime I watch the Vandals bat, I reach for the Buscopan. Spring Racing has seen many East Sandy players go AWOL over the years in spirit and body. Just hoping history does not repeat this year. I lean towards the undermanned East Sandy.

Selections: Woolnough

Carnegie South host a very annoyed Omega, and no doubt will be keen to bat first make an example of the Spiders. Could be a long day down at Lords for the locals. Hope the bar is open.

Cluden host the Melbourne Helenic in what is a very important game for them. Both teams are yet to open their account, and Cluden would not want to be giving potential finalists too much of a start. MH let their first game slip and were comprehensively thrashed by the Weststars, whereas Cluden put up a respectable effort against the Wash Ups. Cluden to accomplished and will win comfortably.

The Golfers have to put the tie behind them and focus on meeting the undefeated CHAG. This will be CHAG's first serious test, and will be going all out to impress. If the Golfers are not switched on, CHAG could get them. The Golfers should win.

The match of the round will be at the Widdop Street Reserve where two undefeated titans take each other on. The Washups have had it all their own way so far this season, and the Westars will be keen to test them out. Bowl short at Widdop and you will be slaughtered.. Gary Slaughter from the Washups has been known to do that, slaughter various attacks. The Washup batting line up looks far to formidable. Wash Ups.

As for the Caulfield Cup, I like Finche as a value bet. The Monopoly Cup in Sydney I fancy Yes Yes Yes, from Redzel and Arcadia Queen. Good luck to all.

An good start to the year for Carpet Cricket, whilst the grass elite sit in the pub. Elwood have banked early wins which will be crucial in the fight for a top 4 spot. Union are chugging along nicely, the junior products for the ex billionaires are paying dividends and east sandy don’t bother showing up until November.

Mackie are looming as Carnegie South’s replacement as the whipping boys of the top grade. Much like the redbacks of recent years, Mackie’s imports carry far too much of the load for a very thin squad. Unavailability hurts mackie more than most. Other clubs would promote junior talent in these situations but they don’t have the juniors ready to promote, instead they must top up with retirees and blokes who should be playing 3rd XI cricket.
If the cash runs out, they may have to compete with the likes of chelt park. The ultimate success has eluded mackie in recent times and there are some on the inside who feel the current strategy isn't working.

The deadbacks are showing why they should have been relegated three years ago. As time goes by, union’s sooking in 2016 about being relegated and then subsequently not promoted being a year later appears to be vindicated even more. The redbacks are in complete freefall. Yours truly must be unwell to agree with the hoops.

Even Moorabbin West look like they have more life in them than the deadbacks and they have a date of death set at the end of the season. The impending fall into the abyss appears to have inspired enough loyal folk to go around least one more season, with their big recruitment drive they will he hoping to go out with a bang. If they miss out once again, will there be enough sorry souls to give it another crack next season?

The sounds of the bayside reported that the souvlaki kings were back to their usual behaviour. No doubt they will once again claim to be the victim at the tribunal, their captain must now be eligible for a loyalty points reward from the SECA tribunal for so many visits.
It’s a conundrum for the SECA; nobody wants to umpire them and no team will play them without umpires. SECAs limp decision a few moons ago to not boot them from the competition has come back to haunt them.

In other news I’m certainly looking forward to finding out who the big marquee players are in the T20 comp. Are there any whispers about potential recruits?

And the final drive by before I take my Valium goes to the Cuckold Kings who maintained their reputation by mankadding a kid.

The grass elite played , there was no need to even go there !
