Were Australia overconfident and Tim Paine's captaincy too defensive?

As an Indian, it's been an amazing tour to witness, from being bowled out for 36 to defeating Aussies in their Gabba fortress it's more of a fairy tale ending. This teaches us in life that almost nothing is impossible, all we need is grit, determination, and power to succeed. So, if we look back at the series(tests in particular) what are the talking points and the debrief?

Like I wrote in The Lounge. Would have been good having someone to spar with as it was a thrilling spectacle and a fabulous advertisement for Test cricket. You must be very proud of your boys. They surprised us with their tenacity, resilience, fair play and ability. Specially from your rookies who performed like seasoned pros. Congrats on a great victory which will be good for Test cricket. Please post here on Big Cricket for the England series as I will be very interested to see how your new guys go from here on.. Feel free to ask any of your friends to also post here as we are trying to build our membership. We are a friendly forum with no trolls.

In my view shash.. ok if I call you that.. I am Ritchie one of the BC staff. In my view that embarrassing 36 did not downhearten your boys it had the opposite effect.. it galvanized them. So much so that they bounced back brilliantly in Melbourne and never really lost that momentum and belief after that. Even after losing some of your top X1 to injury. Whenever our boys felt like we had you down .. you jumped back up off the canvas. This shocked us as this is rarely the case on our soil.

The Gabba Fortress has been breached. But to be honest it was not a typical Gabba pitch. It lacked the usual blistering pace and bounce. The most unusual aspect of it was the crack running down the pitch from day one and its green tinge. This provided some variable bounce and early movement while the wet weather was around. Once the deck dried it became a good batting surface with the cracks not opening much at all..even on the final day. The fact is India played the Gabba track better than we did. Again.. which shocked us.

With Adam Gilchrist defending Tim Paine, do you think Paine should be the captain for the next South Africa Tour (also considering his age 36)?
Pretty sure there must be another good wicketkeeper batsmen in the domestic circuit.

Has Tim Paine even committed to the Ashes. I read his swan song was to be the World Test Championships final in June.
The noise going around is that we change our captain now for the Saffer tour to give him some time to settle in to get himself prepared for the Ashes next year. Makes sense as the last thing we want is to blood a new skipper against England and the all important Ashes. The same nagging question remains if Paine stands down now who will take his place. Australian Test captains dont grow on trees.

There are not a lot staking their claims to be honest. Is a big step up from state to national standard. Personally I like two.. our current white ball keeper Alex Carey and West Aussie Josh Inglis. A left field pick may be in form batsman and former West Aussie keeper Sam Whiteman. Killing two birds here by picking Sam as he was in good Shield batting form plus you dont lose keeping skills overnite. Then again CA may just pick Sam to fill the vacant opening spot as that is where he has been scoring all his runs past few seasons.

one of the big turning points for me was when Starc got smashed for 20 odd runs off an over, from there India gained real confidence & belief they could win.
..and then was he sent to the dog house? No Paine kept bowling him and he continued to leak runs. That was bewildering captaincy. Seemed to me Paine was trying to give all his quicks bowling parity.. tho one was clearly letting down the side. You can't afford that in Test cricket. I say bewildering as in the past Tim has preferred to bowl his best performing blokes. Much like a reward for effort. I wonder if CA took him to task over that to change this policy.

Yeah, utterly pointless continuing to bowl someone when they're consistently giving away easy runs... especially when it comes down to a vital stage like on the last day of a test.

I know it sounds like I'm making excuses for Tim's poor showing in the past two Tests. I am mate and for good reason. The bloke has played another 29 Tests since the cheating and other than the odd DRS mess up (which all captains do) his captaincy and keeping has been exemplary. So his sudden poor form with both is most baffling.
The other day I was alluding to the stress he is under juggling both captaincy and keeping. Pete he is 36. Does this look like a healthy 36 year old male adult.

Fair points mate - from what I've seen of him in those last couple of tests Paine doesn't look like he's properly focused, maybe it has something to do with his personal life ? if that's the case with him as keeper & also doing the captaincy job it definitely doesn't help, or is he just lacking confidence overall ? we can only surmise.

Couldn't open the attachment Craig.
Well to me Tim looks at least 10 years older than his age. Carrying his stress in every facial line. Too much ofa pro to be letting personal issues cloud his game. Nevertheless. I'd not be surprised if he retires the captaincy before Saffer tour.

Well Pete there has been no retiring of captaincy by Tim Paine. In fact chairman of selectors has backed him to the hilt for SAfrica and likely next years Ashes.

Tim is two things mature and a professional. He responds to criticism.. so very chance he will now be more proactive with his captaincy.
