1st Test: South Africa vs West Indies at Port Elizabeth

There's also the "other" Boxing Day test that starts today, the one between South Africa and the West Indies. West Indies haven't had the best start to the tour. They lost to the Makhaya Ntini Invitational XI by 5 runs, thrashed South Africa in the Twenty20 match by five wickets but were then well beaten inside three days by the South Africa "A" side. A mixed tour so far and they'll be hopeful of a competitive performance here as they will go into the game as underdogs.

Both teams performance will come down to each side's batting efforts. Both the Windies and the Proteas have one batsman in form, those being Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Jacques Kallis. The rest though have been ordinary although Hashim Amla and Ashwell Prince have played some good knocks for the South Africans. Chanderpaul however hasn't had much support and too many times this year has found himself playing a lone hand. If that happens again, then the Windies will be up against it once more. Daren Ganga, Chris Gayle (if he plays), Devon Smith and young Brenton Parchment must provide some support to Chanderpaul if the Windies want to remain competitive.

The bowling attacks look pretty potent however. The Twenty20 game showed what Jerome Taylor, Daren Powell and Fidel Edwards can do if they are on their game. South Africa has Dale Steyn, the young speedster who destryoyed New Zealand on their short tour here in November, taking a stggering 20 wickets in only two tests. As well as Steyn, South Africa also possesses Makhaya Ntini who is as fiery as any other bowler, the hot headed Andre Nel as well as Paul Harris and Kallis who can pop up with a few wickets if needed. There's also Shaun Pollock who is one of the most economical bowlers going around.

Expect a good match here with the bowling departments to go head to head. The batters who whether the storm will go a long way to leading their side to victory.

Re: 1st Test: South Africa vs West Indies at Port Elizabeth

Not a good decision so far. West Indies are 2/130 at the end of the first over after lunch.

Daren Ganga was the first to depart for 33 and then Chris Gayle fell to Paul Harris after a whirlwind 66. Runako Morton and Marlon Samuels have since steadied the ship.

Paul Harris has one wicket with Andre Nel the other. Plenty of work to do for South Africa here, they'll need a few more scalps to get themselves back into this contest.

Re: 1st Test: South Africa vs West Indies at Port Elizabeth

West Indies are 281/4 in a great start for their campain. Marlon Samuels fell six short of a century and Ganga/Gayle fell two short of reaching just their sixth 100-run partnership in over 50 stints together. Every West Indian got a start with Gayle (66), Ganga (33), Morton (33), Samuels and Chanderpaul (43*) each contributing their bit. Kallis was the only one to bowl well, without luck though; Steyn, Ntini, Nel and Harris claiming the scalps.

Chanderpaul 86*(225), Powell 0*(0).
Ntini 3/100.

Hey, to paraphrase my dad, if 80,000 of your friends jumped off a bridge, would you do it too?? Well? Would you? Uh-huh, thats what I thought!!
:D

Well, for those of us on the other side, who can't join the privileged 80,000 and have to follow this match, its early tea and then the South African bats try to undue the damage Chanderpaul did.

HAHA oh man, I didn't even get a chance to load the new page and its 1/1

Powell to Gibbs, OUT
HH Gibbs c wicketkeeperRamdin b Powell 0 (4b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Re: 1st Test: South Africa vs West Indies at Port Elizabeth

22/1, Smith warming up at 16 runs off 18 balls. SA needs to produce nicely here till the end of play today. One or two quick wickets before the end of the day and WI looks nice going into tomorrow.

Re: 1st Test: South Africa vs West Indies at Port Elizabeth

The last post wasn't finished loading and: Taylor to Kallis, OUT
JH Kallis c Bravo b Taylor 0 (10m 6b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

53/3

Kallis AND Gibbs go quack quack?!?

Re: 1st Test: South Africa vs West Indies at Port Elizabeth

13.1 Powell to Amla, OUT, he strikes first ball! Powell bowls a perfectly-pitched yorker, Amla moves forward and tries to close the face of the bat, he's early on the shot and doesn't make contact, the middle stump lies uprooted a few milliseconds later
HM Amla b Powell 29 (64m 30b 5x4 0x6) SR: 96.66

63/4 Not looking good for South Africa at all..

Thanks to the fine folks at CricInfo for the PbP

Re: 1st Test: South Africa vs West Indies at Port Elizabeth

Pretty reckless stuff from South Africa. They're going at almost five runs per over but they've lost four wickets. Herschelle Gibbs got a beauty but the rest have got themselves out really. Graeme Smith continues to struggle against Right Arm Fast bowling from over the wicket. Kallis' indecision got himself out and Amla played all over one, his shot was played too early and the ball crashed into the stumps.

This is some really ordinary stuff from South Africa but full credit to the West Indies, they've really come to play, the batters and bowlers are fully switched on and they are here to win.

AB de Villiers in now, he and Ashwell Prince have a lot of work to do.
