1st Twenty20: England vs West Indies at The Oval

The first of two games between these sides takes place at the Oval. West Indies weren't too impressive in the tests bar a couple of superb efforts by Shivnarine Chanderpaul. An off-field spar between new ODI captain Chris Gayle and West Indies board hasn't helped either.

England also have a new captain as well. Paul Collingwood will lead the side after Michael Vaughan decided he no longer wanted the one-day captaincy. Subsequently, he isn't in the side.

Quite a few new faces have been added to both squads which should make the sides differ from their test line-ups.

Should be able to see a good game here. Both teams ready to go the tonk as the chase for quick runs becomes essential. A close contest ensues.

Re: 1st Twenty20: England vs West Indies at The Oval

West Indies to bat first.
The big question is how long can Chris Gayle last for? If he can stay out there, West Indies will put up a good total.

Re: 1st Twenty20: England vs West Indies at The Oval

Gayle out for only 5, but Chanderpaul and Devon Smith dont seem to mind.
It's 47-1 after just 4 overs.

Boundaries aplenty today!

97-1 after 10 overs

Great entertainment from Chanderpaul and Devon Smith here.

Re: 1st Twenty20: England vs West Indies at The Oval

And right on cue, Mascarenhas gets Chanderpaul for 41,
thanks to a great catch from Cook.

West Indies 97-2 after 10.1

Re: 1st Twenty20: England vs West Indies at The Oval

West Indies amassed 8/208 off their 20 overs, a total that proved too tough to chase. Devon Smith made 61 off just 34 balls and was well supported by Marlon Samuels who blasted 51 off 26 delieveries. Wicketkeeper Dinesh Ramdin also got in the act, hitting 24 off 13 balls.

Dimitri Mascarehas picked up 2/39 and James Anderson 2/37.

England tried hard but the total was just too big to chase, they finished on 7/193 with Paul Collingwood the major contributor with 79 off 41 balls. Matt Prior scored 25 and Michael Yardy was undefeated on 23.

But, the Windies had too many economical bowlers which England could not get away and the take proved too tough. Dwayne Smith picked up 3/24 and Darren Sammy took 2/37 with Smith also getting two run-outs to cap off a great game for him.

West Indies won the game by 15 runs, a super batting effort by them, perhaps twenty20 could be their game.

Paul Collingwood was Man of the Match, I thought Dwayne Smith was a bit stiff not to get it.
