2nd Test: South Africa vs West Indies at Cape Town

This should be an interesting test match. Was the Windies surprise win in the first test a one off? Or can they continue on and take the series?

3/160 at tea on the first day is a little slow, but the Windies are taking their time and consolidating after a few early wickets.

Not sure why Sarwan is not playing. He has recovered now from his ankle injury and is playing for Guyana at home. Surely a half fit Sarwan is a much better option than Morton.

Just as suspected, Herschelle Gibbs is dropped for Neil McKenzie, who will open with Graeme Smith. And Sammy is out and is replaced by Rawl Lewis, who comes into the side as the team's spinner, bowling his leg breaks. Lewis has played only four tests, his first was in 1997.

West Indies have lost another two wickets with Makhaya Ntini striking swiftly to get two in rather quick time. The Windies are 5/206, Chanderpaul is 47 not out with Dinesh Ramdin on 15. There was an article that Ramdin was facing the chop after a rather poor showing with the bat over the last few tests but that appears to be only a rumour. A good innings from Ramdin will certainly help his selection chances for the rest of the tour.

Re: 2nd Test: South Africa vs West Indies at Cape Town

West Indies added three runs in the morning session before Powell and Edwards fell to Andre Nel. Shiv Chanderpaul was the not out batsman on 65.

South Africa are 2/89 in reply. McKenzie fell for 23 and Smith for 28, both out to Jerome Taylor.

Fidel Edwards did his hamstring in the 10th over of the innings and is off the ground. The Windies will find it hard being one pace bowler down

Re: 2nd Test: South Africa vs West Indies at Cape Town

South Africa made it to 5/218 at stumps. They were in a bit of trouble at 5/131 but Boucher and Prince steadied the ship to put the Proteas in a good position.

Bravo picked up three wickets to put West Indies right back into the game but they'll need to do the hard yards early tomorrow to once again get back into it.

Re: 2nd Test: South Africa vs West Indies at Cape Town

South Africa were bolwed out for 321 with Ashwell Prince top scoring on 98. He was run out after a good throw from Jermone Taylor to wicketkeeper ramdin saw him short of his ground. Mark Boucher made 59 but the tail didn't really fire with Daren Powell and Rawl Lewis cleaning them up without too much trouble. That gave South Africa a lead of 78 runs on first innings.

West Indies in reply have moved to 0/30 at tea, trailing by 48 runs. Dinesh Ramdin has scored 13 of them with some 12 runs coming from leg-byes.

West Indies would be aiming to have a lead of about 50 or 60 by stumps and hopefully for them without any loss of wickets. The Proteas will be aiming to take as many wickets as they can to reduce West Indies lead by stumps, claiming a few wickets will certainly help as batting last on this pitch won't be easy.

Re: 2nd Test: South Africa vs West Indies at Cape Town

Ramdin is out for 32, after snicking Kallis to Boucher. Wasn't a bad innings by Ramdin but he just fails to go with it sometimes and is probably what is holding him back at the moment.

Windies are 1/59, trailing by 19. In walks Runako Morton at 3.

Re: 2nd Test: South Africa vs West Indies at Cape Town

Morton out to Dale Steyn for one, Boucher takes another catch. Steyn has a hamstring injury according to the cricinfo commentators but is still bowling off his full run. Oh well, it doesn't matter. The bowling change by Smith works wonders and now the Windies are 2/60 and still behind by 18.

Samuels in at four.

Re: 2nd Test: South Africa vs West Indies at Cape Town

Two quick wickets has the Windies behind the eight ball now at 2/60 still 18 runs adrift....

Re: 2nd Test: South Africa vs West Indies at Cape Town

Ganga is gone, plays onto his stumps off Ntini for 22.

West Indies are 3/86, they only lead by eight runs. The in-form Chanderpaul is in now, Chris Gayle is injured and that is the reason why he didn't open, he will still bat however.

Re: 2nd Test: South Africa vs West Indies at Cape Town

One question: How can Dale Steyn get a runner when he batted but yet still pound in off his full run? Something a bit wrong there....

Yep, Windies in a bit of trouble now. This is the point in a test match where the good sides put something together and the weak side fall over. A big partnership between Chanderpaul and Samuals is now required. Samuels has been promising a big innings for some time now and his form is good. This would be the time.

They really need to just playout the last half an hour here without losing another wicket and start again tommorow.

Morton must be in trouble for his spot after another failure. He has been terrible in this series. It's not just that he has been unlucky, they have been terrible cricket strokes. Not sure why Sarwan is still playing domestic cricket, he is worth another 20-30 runs for the team at the very worst.

Yeah, it's pretty suss. I don't see how Steyn can pull a hamstring and then suddenly bowl of his normal run. I don't think West Indies will be too happy.

Spoke too soon, Samuels is out to Nel LBW for 18. West Indies in big trouble now, four down and they lead by just 18 runs. They shut up shop too early and it has probably cost them here, there's still half an hour to go today.

Gayle is in now, injured and with a runner. He'll need a massive score to fend off defeat here. A captain's knock perhaps?

Yeah, no idea why Sarwan isn't playing. I think getting him into some form and increasing his game time would be some of the reasons why he is still there. Sarwan certainly has more value than Morton though.

4/93 now.

Re: 2nd Test: South Africa vs West Indies at Cape Town

West Indies reached 262, well short of what they needed to get. Chris Gayle was out for 38 leaving Chanderpaul with only the tail for company. The tail ended up batting okay, Taylor made 21 and tailor made number 11, Fidel Edwards also made 21 as West Indies finished up all out after 101.5 overs. Chanderpaul was again not out, this time on 70.

Dale Steyn was in the wickets again, taking 4/44 with Andre Nel snaring 3/62.

In reply, South Africa are 1/57 after nine overs, chasing 185 for victory. Dwayne Bravo just struck to get rid of AB de Villiers who is out for 23. Graeme Smith is 34 not out as South Africa seem intent on finishing this tonight.

Re: 2nd Test: South Africa vs West Indies at Cape Town

Both Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla were out to Rawl Lewis but the Proteas knocked off the runs, making 3/186 to win by seven wickets. Smith scored 86, a welcome return to some form for him, Kallis and Prince were not out at the end of the match.

A much better performance from South Africa, they were a lot better in this game, they managed to bowl West Indies out for a lot less than in the first test and the Windies just couldnt get the wickets they wanted.

Ashwell Prince was named Man of the Match and the series is now tied at one each.

The third and final test is in Durban starting on January 10.
