3rd ODI: Pakistan vs Sri Lanka at Abu Dhabi

The final match of this short series is played out today with Pakistan having won the first two games pretty convincingly. While Sri Lanka haven't played any of their big name players, their second string side haven't played all that well with Pakistan cruising to victory in both games. Sri Lanka will be desperate to change all that, considering they did come second in the recent World Cup.

Their key to victory is to limit the influence that Pakistan player, Shahid Afridi, has on the game. In the first match, Afridi slammed 74 runs, striking at over 200 runs per 100 balls. The second game, Afridi did little with the bat but was able to take three wickets with the ball, proving to be quite handy to the Pakistan side and a thorn in the side of the Lankans. The Sri Lankans need to silence him if they want to win this game and they'd also want their bowlers to life their efforts. They have been smacked around in this series so far, conceding 313 runs in the second match. The pace battery of Perera, Fernando and Maharoof gave away more than 6.5 runs an over each in that fixture which is far too high. Sri Lanka's batting has also struggled in the face of a determined Pakistan outfit.

Pakistan have just been too good so far and they would be looking to sweep the series after a disastrous World Cup campaign. Sri Lanka would be looking to come away with some pride, with their fringe players having something to prove to the selectors.

Should be another good game, get ready for an entertaining contest.

Re: 3rd ODI: Pakistan vs Sri Lanka at Abu Dhabi

Well, so much for Shahid Afridi playing. Pakistan have decided to rest him.

Both teams have made a variety of changes with the series being already won and lost. Sri Lanka trying to get a win on the board and Pakistan resting a few players.

Sri Lanka won the toss and decided to bowl first.

Pakistan XI: Mohammad Hafeez, Salman Butt, Yasir Hameed, Mohammad Yousuf, Shoaib Malik*, Kamran Akmal+, Fawad Alam, Iftikhar Anjum, Mohammad Asif, Abdur Rehman, Najaf Shah

Sri Lanka XI:WU Tharanga, ST Jayasuriya CK Kapugedera, DPMD Jayawardene*, LPC Silva, TM Dilshan, HAPW Jayawardene+, MF Maharoof, KS Lokuarachchi, SL Malinga, CRD Fernando

Sri Lanka 0/0 after 1 over. Mohammad Asif bowled a maiden.

Re: 3rd ODI: Pakistan vs Sri Lanka at Abu Dhabi

Jayasuriya plays on to Iftikhar Anjum.

1/62 in the 11th over.

Re: 3rd ODI: Pakistan vs Sri Lanka at Abu Dhabi

Iftikhar Anjum gets his second. Manages to entice Tharanga to play at his delivery but only manages to knick it to the keeper, Kamran Akmal.

2/73 in the 13th over.

Re: 3rd ODI: Pakistan vs Sri Lanka at Abu Dhabi

Mahela Jayawardene finally out for 83.

Sri Lanka 225-4 after 41.2 overs.

Looks like they're giving Pakistan a contest today. They should get pretty close to 300.

Re: 3rd ODI: Pakistan vs Sri Lanka at Abu Dhabi

Najaf Shah made his debut for Pakistan today, and gave up 59 runs from his 10 overs. Fawad Alam also makes his debut for Pakistan today, and we'll see if he fares any better when he bats.

Re: 3rd ODI: Pakistan vs Sri Lanka at Abu Dhabi

And how do you like that? Farveez Maharoof is brought in at number 6. He's been promoted up the order ahead of both Dilshan and Prasana Jayawardene. This is probably a smart decision from Sri Lanka. We'll see.

Re: 3rd ODI: Pakistan vs Sri Lanka at Abu Dhabi

Maharoof out for 10 from 9 deliveries. Not too terrible, I suppose.

Sri Lanka 241-5 after 44

Re: 3rd ODI: Pakistan vs Sri Lanka at Abu Dhabi

Lasith Malinga is run-out off the last ball as Sri Lanka reach 9/296 off their 50 overs.

Iftikhar Anjum's figures were ruined in the end a bit there but he still finishes with 3/53 off his 10 overs. The mainstay of the innings were the 83 and 64 by Jayawardene and Silva respectively. Tharanga made 40 opening the innings and Tillekaratne Dilshan smashed 28 off 14 balls at the death.

Mohammad Hafeez took 2/55 for the Pakistanis. Abdur Rehman picked up 1/44 in just his 7th game with Mohammad Asif getting the other wicket although being very expensive in the process.

Should be an interesting chase on the cards. Pakistan have a youngish batting line-up, they don't have Inzi or Afridi there plus they have a debutant in Fawad Alam.

We are for an enthralling chase here.

Late start too, 4pm local time. Geez, what time does the sun go down over there? :p

Re: 3rd ODI: Pakistan vs Sri Lanka at Abu Dhabi

Pakistan 53-1 after 10 overs.

Mohammad Hafeez and Yasir Hameed are off to a good start here.
It looks like Pakistan has a shot at reaching 297.

Re: 3rd ODI: Pakistan vs Sri Lanka at Abu Dhabi

Collapse!

Hafeez run out for 34 after 12 overs.
Hameed out for 22 after 13.2.

Pakistan 66-3 after 14

And now Yousuf out for 5,
and Fawad Alam out for a golden duck on his debut immediately afterwards!

Pakistan 68-5

Re: 3rd ODI: Pakistan vs Sri Lanka at Abu Dhabi

Kamran Akmal survives the hat trick ball, but at 70-5 after 16 overs, this match looks like it's over. Akmal and Malik would need at least a 150-run partnership here.

Re: 3rd ODI: Pakistan vs Sri Lanka at Abu Dhabi

And now Akmal run out after 16.1

70-6, and this sucker is over

Re: 3rd ODI: Pakistan vs Sri Lanka at Abu Dhabi

Sri Lanka romped home by 115 runs in the end. Only Shoaib Malik put up any fight with the bat and remained 79 not out when the last wicket fell.

Both the debutants for Pakistan made ducks with Najaf Shah the last man out for a second-ball duck.

For the bowlers, Dilhara Fernando picked up 3/20 off 7 overs with Lokuarachchi taking 2/32 and Farveez Maharoof 2/43.

So, the series ends up 2-1 in Pakistan's favour. A pretty one-sided game in the end, Sri Lanka bought back experienced players with Pakistan resting theirs and it proved to be a big difference in the end.

Dilhara Fernando was the Man of the Match.
Mahela Jayawardene and Shahid Afridi were named joint winners of the Man of the Series award.
