Bangladesh in South Africa

Bangladesh begin their tour of South Africa tonight. A shortish tour at less than a month but there's plenty of cricket squeezed in with the teams taking each other on in at least one game of every format.

The Tigers will be up against it in this series. South Africa boast a whole range of star players whilst bangaldesh have had to start rebuilding again after a mass exodus. Experience will play a big part in this series with the average age of the Bangladesh one-day squad being only 22.

T20 just kicked off - Bangladesh won the toss and chose to field! This seems a bit strange as the commentator on cricinfo has said:

"The pitch seems to be excellent for batting. Hard surface, no green grass, not too much moisture"

Will be good to see how it develops - Bosman and Gibbs to open.

Wow, this could be a major upset. SA posted 118 in 14 overs and Bangladesh have 58 for 2 in the 5th over in reply! Required RR is only around 7.5

Tight contest, good to see the Bangledesh team putting up more and more of a fight in international cricket

Herschelle Gibbs has been dropped after breaking a team curfew. He'll miss the entire one-day series and will have to attend a Alcohol Rehabilitation Program before he is allowed to play in South African colours again.

Gibbs' poor behaviour has partly been attributed to his recent and highly publicised divorce with his wife.

Easy win for the Proteas. Amazingly, only one batter got a half-century in their total, that man was Jacques Kallis. Seven other batters got a start scoring between 23 and 36 (inclusive) but no-one was able to make a big score which was probably the reason why South Africa didn't get 300. South Africa were on par for 265 for the last part of the innings but an explosive knock of 23 from only seven balls by Johann Louw saw South Africa's projected total rise quickly.

Naeem Islam was Bangladesh's best bowler with 3/60 but was expensive with Shakib al Hasan taking 2/48 and was the only bowler to really limit the ease at which the South African batters scored their runs.

In reply, the Tigers were slow to start but took a liking to Louw who went for 50 from seven overs before he was dragged. Up the other end, Dale Steyn removed Imrul Kayes and Junaid Suddique cheaply and when Tamim Iqbal being run out in the 14th over, things started to look grim for the Bangladesh side. However, Mohammad Ashraful stood up as captain and combined with Shakib al Hasan for a 92-run partnership after the fall of keeper Mushfiqur Rahim. However, the run rate crept above seven and it was Steyn who got the breakthrough as Ashraful edged to Boucher for 73 to give Steyn his third. Steyn then found himself on a hat-trick as Raqibul Hasan was bowled by a similar delivery which claimed Ashraful. From there it was smooth sailing for the South Africans although Naeem Islam tried hard, the run rate required blew out and the bowlers perished trying to find the boundary.

The Morkel brothers helped remove the middle and lower order getting five wickets between them which capped off a pretty good game for them as they both finished not out with the bat in the South African innings.

Not a bad game in the end but Bangladesh started behind the eight ball with those early losses and when Iqbal (who is their in-form batsman at the moment) was run out that made things very hard for the Tigers and they never recovered. They'll need to start better in the next couple of games if they want to push the Proteas all the way.

Dale Steyn was Man of the Match for his great bowling of 4/16. Game Two is a day game at Willowmore Park in Benoni on Sunday.

Play is well underway in game two. South Africa batted first and amassed 4/358 from their 50 overs. Hashim Amla scored his first ever ODI century, making 140 from 135 balls. The Proteas were heading for about 310 before AB de Villiers and Albie Morkel went ballistic at the end of the innings. de Villiers scored 54 not out from 27 balls and Morkel 37 from 13 as they took their side well past 300. Earlier, Graeme Smith scored a handy 65 and Jacques Kallis a run-a-ball 49.

Almost all of the Bangladesh bowlers took a hammering with Abdur Razzak copping the bulk of the punishement with 1/88 from only nine overs. Syed Rasel was also expensive with 1/75 from ten. The only bowler to stay under six an over was Mashrafe Mortaza with 1/54 from his ten overs. The other wicket-taker was Naeem Islam.

In reply, Bangladesh have started reasonably well. They are 2/92 in the 18th over however the required run rate is now over eight so they'll need to really up the ante now. Tamim Iqbal got the Tigers off to a flyer but was out for 41 from only 22 balls. When he fell the score was 46 after five overs.

Plenty of work to for the Tigers.

The slaughter continues. Partway through the last session, South Africa are 1/230, Smith has just brought up his century, he's 103 not out with Hashim Amla on 72, Amla's scored about 20 runs from the last three overs.

Shahadat Hossain has the only wicket, that of Neil McKenzie for 42.

The over rate has stayed pretty bad for the entire day, the Tigers are about eight overs behind at the moment so taking the last half hour is almost but assured. There are two spinners on now though so perhaps they might make up a few overs. Still 26 overs left to bowl however.

5/404 at lunch. Smith was out for 157 and Amla 112. Shakib Al Hasan has 2/117 with Mahbubul Alam and Mashrafe Mortaza the other wicket-talers so far on day two.

Good session for the Tiges but South Africa are still in control at the moment.

Good fight-back from Bangladesh. Hopefully they can roll South Africa for 450 and try to make them bat twice.

South Africa now 7/420.

A fantastic effort so far from Bangladesh today. Shakib Al Hasan has been the major contributor taking 4 wickets.

South Africa declared at 9/441, Shakib Al Hasan picked up five wickets.

In reply, Bangladesh reached 3/33 at tea and have gone on to be 8/131 midway through the last session. Makhaya Ntini had lead the way for the Proteas with 3/20, Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel have two wickets each.

Mushfiqur Rahim is still trying hard for the Tigers, 35 not out at the moment. Shahadat Hossain is up to 19 in quick time.

Another poor batting display from Bangladesh after they did so well today with the ball. They'll struggle to make South Africa bat again unless they can greatly improve their batting in the second innings.

Mushfiqur Rahim's gone now, ball from Kallis was full and straight, Mushfiqur plays all around it and hits him dead in front. LBW for 48.

9/148 now, trailing by 293 runs.

Kallis bowls Shahadat Hossain to claim his second wicket and finishes with neat figures of 2/10. A beautiful yorker and Hossain just had no answer.

All out for 153 from just 36.4 overs and the deficit is 288.

South Africa have also enforced the follow-on. There'll probably be only a few overs before stumps as we are already inside the extra half-hour of play.

Bangladesh 1/20 at Stumps still trailing by 268 runs.

Hopefully they can make South Africa bat again. That would be a good effort from here.
