Batting Videos

Hi all,

managed to get a friend to tape me batting for 2 buckets of balls in a bowling machine this weekend. The machine was set to 60mph and was swinging both in and out. I was trying to keep good shape rather than look for the perfect shot.

I'm sorry about the quality, but it was filmed on my iphone camera. My brother in law has a HD video camera, and the next time I go in a few weeks i'll hopefully take it with my and film the whole session.

Would appreciate any constructive comments.

Re: Batting Videos

Generally it looks good, your setup is solid with your eyes level and your head still. You look like you have a comfortable stance.

I think the problems start with your backswing. It's hard to tell but it looks like you are gripping the bat quite hard with your bottom hand because the backswign and downswing are not quite right. You are adjusting your position with your hands rather than your head and shoulders. This puts you in odd shapes sometimes. For example the bat coming down from well outside off stump even though you picked it up somewhere over middle. Put simply, it's not a smooth, repeatable swing. It's also why your footwork can be a but sluggish.

That said, you do adapt well to these flaws and hit the ball along the ground well, it's just you are pobably not getting the timing and power you should be.

Re: Batting Videos

Great advice David. I can see your point after looking at the video again.

It looks like i'm playing inside out rather than coming through nice and straight. I do grip quite hard with the bottom hand a lot - i've got an idea for an inner glove with a lump between my thumb and forefinger (like the Adam Gilchrist squash ball) to help me grip with just thumb and 1 or 2 fingers. I think by gripping too tight i'm choking the handle and it's meaning i'm bottom hand dominant.

I presume that would be the reason a lot of my drives are unintentionally lofted?

I'm going to try and change my backswing to the one Gary Palmer recommends, keeping my arms in the diamond shape and opening the face of the bat.

Re: Batting Videos

That's an excellent plan James. Top hand control is very important on the drives.

I would also look at working on leading with your head and shoulder too, get your weight much more forward (even on back foot drives this is true). It's all about shape.
